Saint Thomas Holds Off Drake for Road Victory
DES MOINES, Iowa (Interstat) — In a hard-fought Pioneer Football League contest that defied pregame projections, the Saint Thomas Tommies capitalized on a stout defensive effort and a methodical ground game to defeat the Drake Bulldogs 20-13 on Saturday at Drake Stadium.
The Tommies, who entered the game as underdogs according to Interstat’s ELO system, improved their season record to 6-3, matching the Bulldogs’ identical mark. The game’s total of 33 points fell well below the over/under line of 49.5.
Saint Thomas set the tone early with a commanding 15-play, 75-yard scoring drive that consumed over 12 minutes of the first-quarter clock. The drive was kept alive by a key 24-yard completion from quarterback Andy Peters to receiver Eli Paulson and was capped by a 6-yard touchdown run by Stefano Giovannelli. Ben Hoiland’s extra point gave the Tommies a 7-0 lead with 2:51 remaining in the opening quarter.
Drake responded with a scoring drive of its own, bridging the first and second quarters. The Bulldogs marched 77 yards in 7 plays, with the drive sparked by a 37-yard connection from quarterback Logan Inagawa to Isaiah Bragg. Inagawa finished the possession himself, plunging in from 2 yards out for a touchdown. Harry Balke’s kick cut the Saint Thomas lead to 7-6 early in the second quarter.
The Tommies answered with a 13-play drive that stalled inside the Drake 10-yard line, leading to a 25-yard field goal from Hoiland to extend their lead to 10-6.
Just before halftime, Drake mounted a threat. Inagawa engineered a 9-play, 42-yard drive in the final 1:12 of the half, setting up a 35-yard field goal from Balke as time expired, sending the teams to the locker room with Saint Thomas holding a narrow 10-7 lead.
The third quarter proved decisive. After a Drake drive deep into Saint Thomas territory, Tommies defensive back Ryan Calcagno intercepted an Inagawa pass at the Saint Thomas 23-yard line, returning it 16 yards to halt the Bulldogs’ momentum.
Capitalizing on the turnover, the Tommies embarked on a 10-play, 61-yard drive that consumed over half of the quarter. The drive was sustained by a defensive pass interference penalty against Drake and was finished by Gabriel Abel, who powered in from 2 yards out for a touchdown. Hoiland’s PAT gave Saint Thomas a 17-7 advantage with 45 seconds left in the third.
Drake refused to go quietly, mounting a 13-play, 58-yard drive to open the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs moved the ball efficiently, with runs from Luke Woodson and Nick Herman, and receptions from Taj Hughes, but the drive ultimately stalled at the Saint Thomas 24. Balke connected on his second field goal of the day, this time from 41 yards, to pull Drake within a touchdown at 17-10 with 10:17 remaining.
The Tommies responded with a clock-draining, 14-play, 61-yard drive that took over six minutes off the clock. The possession, fueled primarily by the running of Abel and Peters, advanced to the Drake 1-yard line but could not punch it in for a touchdown. Hoiland sealed the drive with a 20-yard field goal, pushing the Saint Thomas lead back to seven points at 20-10 with 3:19 left on the clock.
Drake’s final two possessions ended on turnovers on downs, with the Saint Thomas defense holding firm in the closing minutes to secure the victory.
Offensively, the Tommies were led by a balanced effort from quarterback Andy Peters of Boise, Idaho, who completed 13 of 21 passes for 121 yards and added 66 rushing yards on 15 carries. Running back Gabriel Abel of Trenton, New Jersey, carried the ball 11 times for 37 yards and a touchdown.
For Drake, quarterback Logan Inagawa of Atlanta, Georgia, completed 14 of 22 passes for 154 yards and one interception, while also rushing for 37 yards and a touchdown. Running back Nick Herman of Chicago, Illinois, was a workhorse, grinding out 60 yards on 12 carries. Receiver Taj Hughes of Phoenix, Arizona, was a frequent target, hauling in 8 receptions for 55 yards.
The Tommies’ special teams were bolstered by punter Elliot Huether of Minnetonka, Minnesota, who averaged 41.3 yards on four punts, consistently flipping field position in his team’s favor.
The victory gives Saint Thomas momentum heading into their final two games of the season, a home contest against Presbyterian next Saturday and a road game at North Dakota State on Nov. 22. Drake will look to rebound on the road at Dayton next Saturday before returning home to face Morehead State on Nov. 22.
