Mercer at Western Carolina

CULLOWHEE, N.C. (Interstat) — A Southern Conference showdown with potential championship implications is set for Saturday when the surging Mercer Bears visit the Western Carolina Catamounts at E.J. Whitmire Stadium.

The Bears (7-1, 5-0), riding a six-game winning streak, are one of the hottest teams in the FCS. They are coming off a dominant 52-28 road victory over Furman last Saturday, where quarterback Braden Atkinson threw for 426 yards and four touchdowns. Mercer’s offense has been explosive, averaging over 48 points per game during their streak.

Western Carolina (6-3, 4-1) has won four of its last five and is fresh off a 35-28 win at Chattanooga. Quarterback Taron Dickens leads a potent Catamounts attack that has surpassed 35 points in five of its six victories this season.

The matchup features two of the conference’s top offenses, setting the stage for a potential shootout. Interstat’s game simulator projects a 42-35 victory for Mercer.

A win for Mercer would solidify its position atop the conference standings, while Western Carolina looks to defend its home field and tighten the race.
