North Dakota State at North Dakota

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by missed opportunities and critical turnovers, the North Dakota State Bison remained undefeated, edging the North Dakota Fighting Hawks 15-10 on Saturday at the Alerus Center.

The game, a stark contrast to the high-scoring affair projected by pregame analytics, was secured by a late fourth-quarter touchdown run by Bison quarterback Cole Payton and a defensive stand that ended with an interception in the final seconds.

North Dakota State, the visiting team, improved to 10-0 across all competitions this season, while North Dakota fell to 6-4.

The Fighting Hawks struck first, capitalizing on an early interception by linebacker Malachi McNeal. His 22-yard return set up North Dakota at the Bison 11-yard line. Two plays later, running back Sawyer Seidl powered into the end zone from 2 yards out to give the home team a 7-0 lead with 2:52 remaining in the first quarter.

From there, the game devolved into a field position battle and a series of squandered chances for North Dakota. The Bison offense, while not explosive, methodically chipped away at the lead. Kicker Eli Ozick connected on field goals from 24, 38 and 33 yards in the second and third quarters to bring North Dakota State to within a point at 10-9.

North Dakota’s only other points came on a 32-yard field goal from Kenten Laughman in the third quarter. The Fighting Hawks’ offense, led by quarterback Jerry Kaminski, consistently moved the ball between the 20s but repeatedly stalled in scoring territory. Kaminski finished 21 of 38 for 170 yards and was intercepted three times, while adding 28 yards on the ground.

The Bison’s defensive backfield was the difference, with Keenan Wilson, Darius Givance and Anthony Chideme-Alfaro each recording an interception. The final pick by Chideme-Alfaro at the North Dakota State 1-yard line with 11 seconds left sealed the victory.

North Dakota State’s offense was paced by a balanced effort from quarterback Cole Payton and running back Barika Kpeenu. Payton, from Omaha, Nebraska, completed 8 of 15 passes for 125 yards and rushed for 68 yards, including the decisive 8-yard touchdown scramble with 2:22 left in the game. The subsequent two-point conversion attempt failed. Kpeenu, a Fargo native, ground out 73 yards on 18 carries.

The Bison’s game-winning drive was keyed by a 30-yard completion from Payton to tight end Reis Kessel, setting up Payton’s scoring run two plays later.

For North Dakota, Seidl was the workhorse, carrying the ball 23 times for 68 yards and the team’s lone touchdown. Wide receiver B.J. Fleming was Kaminski’s primary target, hauling in six catches for 53 yards. The Fighting Hawks’ defense, led by punter Luke Silvernale who averaged 48.7 yards on three kicks, kept the high-powered Bison offense in check for most of the contest, but the offense’s four turnovers proved insurmountable.

The victory extends North Dakota State’s perfect season as they prepare to host Northern Iowa next Saturday. North Dakota looks to rebound on the road at Murray State.
