Illinois State rolls past Indiana State behind Rittenhouse’s 4 touchdowns

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (Interstat) — In a stunning reversal of pregame expectations, the Illinois State Redbirds delivered an offensive masterclass, dismantling the Indiana State Sycamores 52-20 on Saturday at Memorial Stadium.

The game, which was projected to be a narrow victory for the home team, turned into a one-sided affair almost from the outset. The Redbirds improved to 7-3 on the season, while the Sycamores fell to 3-7.

Illinois State quarterback Tommy Rittenhouse was nearly flawless, orchestrating an attack that amassed over 500 total yards. The junior from Geneva, Illinois, completed 29 of 34 passes for 314 yards and four touchdowns, adding another score on the ground with a 4-yard run just before halftime.

The Redbirds set the tone on their opening drive, marching 70 yards in a methodical 15-play sequence that consumed over half of the first quarter. The drive culminated in a 2-yard touchdown pass from Rittenhouse to tight end Max Ziebarth, giving Illinois State a lead it would never relinquish.

Indiana State responded with a drive of its own, with quarterback Keegan Patterson connecting with Talan White-Hatch on a 25-yard scoring strike to tie the game at 7-7 late in the first quarter. Patterson, from Longmont, Colorado, finished 16 of 26 for 202 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Any momentum the Sycamores gained was immediately extinguished as the Redbirds exploded for 28 points in the second quarter, turning the game into a rout. The onslaught began with a 6-yard touchdown run by workhorse running back Victor Dawson. The Akron, Ohio, native was a force all afternoon, rushing for 116 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries.

Rittenhouse then found Dylan Lord for a 3-yard touchdown pass, extending the lead to 21-7. After forcing a Sycamores punt, the Redbirds struck again. This time, Rittenhouse hit running back Seth Glatz on a short pass that the Morton, Illinois, product turned into a 20-yard touchdown.

The Illinois State defense then delivered a critical blow just before halftime. With under a minute to play, defensive back Eddie Kasper intercepted a Patterson pass, giving the Redbirds possession near midfield. Rittenhouse efficiently drove the offense down the field and capped the drive with his 4-yard scramble for a touchdown, sending Illinois State into the locker room with a commanding 35-14 advantage.

The Redbirds picked up where they left off in the third quarter. Rittenhouse engineered another scoring drive, finishing it with a 12-yard touchdown pass to Daniel Sobkowicz. On the ensuing possession, the Illinois State defense struck again as Cam Wilson intercepted Patterson, setting up a short field. Glatz punched it in from 2 yards out for his second touchdown of the day, making the score 49-14.

Glatz finished with 55 rushing yards and a touchdown on 12 carries, adding 23 receiving yards and another score.

Indiana State managed a third-quarter response with a 33-yard touchdown run by Deion Brown, but the extra point attempt failed, leaving the score at 49-20. Brown, from St. Louis, led the Sycamores’ ground game with 39 yards on seven carries.

The Redbirds added a final exclamation point late in the third quarter with a 49-yard field goal from Matt Maldonado to reach the final margin of 52-20. The Illinois State defense stifled any further comeback attempts in the fourth quarter, with backup quarterback Beckham Pellant and running back Cal Martine effectively managing the clock. Martine carried 12 times for 52 yards in relief duty.

Wide receiver Rashad Rochelle was a bright spot for Indiana State, hauling in six passes for 103 yards and a spectacular 64-yard touchdown reception from Patterson in the second quarter.

The lopsided result defied the pregame projections. Interstat’s game simulator had predicted a 30-29 victory for Indiana State, and the Sycamores had been installed as a 10.5-point favorite. The combined score of 72 points also easily surpassed the over/under line of 56.5.

The victory marks Illinois State’s third win in its last four games as it builds momentum for a late-season push. The Redbirds travel to face South Dakota State next Saturday. Indiana State, seeking to regroup, will hit the road to take on Youngstown State.
