Grambling Outlasts Bethune-Cookman in High-Scoring Affair

GRAMBLING, La. (Interstat) — In a game defined by explosive offensive bursts and a relentless ground attack, the Grambling Tigers outlasted the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats 31 to 23 on Saturday at Eddie G. Robinson Memorial Stadium.

Hayden Benoit, the Tigers’ quarterback from Loreauville, Louisiana, was surgical in his efficiency, completing 12 of 20 passes for 220 yards and four touchdowns, guiding Grambling to its seventh win against three losses this season. The victory kept the Tigers in the hunt near the top of the Southwestern Athletic Conference standings.

Bethune-Cookman, which fell to an even 5-5, was led by a dynamic offensive effort from quarterback Timmy McClain of Sanford, Florida, who threw for 224 yards and a touchdown while adding another score on the ground. Despite a 20-point second-quarter explosion that briefly gave them the lead, the Wildcats could not contain Grambling’s balanced offensive assault in the final period.

The game began as a defensive struggle, with both teams trading punts and negative plays. Grambling struck first, capitalizing on a short field with a 23-yard field goal from Theodore Caballero. The Tigers then extended their lead late in the opening quarter when Benoit connected with Andrerw Frazier on a deep 38-yard touchdown pass, making the score 10 to 0.

The second quarter, however, belonged entirely to Bethune-Cookman. The Wildcats’ offense, which had sputtered early, suddenly found its rhythm. Juan Dominguez put the Wildcats on the board with a 30-yard field goal. The ensuing drive saw McClain engineer a masterful series, capping it with an 11-yard scramble for a touchdown to tie the game.

After Grambling answered with a quick-strike 59-yard touchdown pass from Benoit to Nae’Saan Dickerson to retake the lead, Bethune-Cookman responded in kind. On the very next play from scrimmage, McClain found a wide-open Maleek Huggins for a 61-yard touchdown, tying the game once again at 17.

The shootout continued as Benoit led the Tigers right back down the field, finishing the drive with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Patrick Williams. Unfazed, McClain marched the Wildcats into field goal range in the final minute of the half, allowing Dominguez to drill a 39-yard kick to send the teams into halftime with Grambling holding a narrow 24 to 20 advantage.

The third quarter was a stark contrast to the second, with both defenses tightening. The only significant scoring opportunity ended when Bethune-Cookman safety Johnny Harris III intercepted a pass in the end zone, preserving the four-point deficit heading into the final quarter.

Grambling seized control in the fourth. After a defensive stand, the Tigers embarked on a methodical, clock-consuming drive that was powered by the running of Andre Crews and Clyde McClendon Jr. Benoit put the exclamation point on the possession, threading an 8-yard touchdown pass to Keith Jones Jr. to extend the lead to 31 to 20 with just over four minutes remaining.

Bethune-Cookman, now in a two-score hole, switched to quarterback Cam’Ron Ransom in an attempt to spark a late comeback. Ransom, who had seen action throughout the game, led a frantic drive to get the Wildcats into field goal range. Dominguez connected from 42 yards out to cut the deficit to 31 to 23 with 1:22 left on the clock.

Any hope for a miraculous finish was extinguished on the ensuing onside kick attempt, which failed to travel the necessary 10 yards. From there, Grambling put the game away behind its powerful running game, with Crews ripping off runs of 16 and 27 yards to bleed the remaining clock and seal the victory.

Crews was a workhorse for the Tigers, amassing 130 rushing yards on 14 carries, consistently providing the offensive balance that kept the Wildcats’ defense off-balance. Huggins was the standout for Bethune-Cookman, compiling 122 receiving yards and a touchdown on six catches while also adding 16 rushing yards.

The win propels Grambling into a crucial road matchup at Alcorn State next Saturday. Bethune-Cookman will look to get back to .500 when they travel to face Jackson State, also next Saturday.
