Idaho State Holds Off Cal Poly for 27‑17 Home Victory
POCATELLO, Idaho (Interstat) — The Idaho State Bengals, defying pregame projections, used a dominant first quarter and a balanced offensive attack to secure a 27-17 victory over the Cal Poly Mustangs on Saturday at the ICCU Dome.
Entering the contest as a statistical underdog despite being a slim betting favorite, Idaho State improved its record to 4-6, while Cal Poly fell to 3-7.
The game unfolded in stark contrast to the high-scoring affair predicted by Interstat’s game simulator, which had projected a 41-40 Cal Poly win. Instead, the Bengals’ defense stymied the Mustangs’ efforts for long stretches, and the combined score of 44 points fell well under the over/under line of 62.5.
Idaho State set the tone immediately, orchestrating two meticulous touchdown drives in the opening quarter to build a commanding 14-0 lead. The Bengals’ first possession covered 75 yards in eight plays, culminating in a 17-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jordan Cooke to receiver Michael Shulikov.
After forcing a Cal Poly punt, the Bengals embarked on another long march, this time a 14-play, 77-yard drive that ate up over seven minutes of clock. Cooke capped it with a 3-yard quarterback keeper into the end zone, showcasing a dual-threat ability that would trouble the Mustangs all afternoon.
Cal Poly, which was held scoreless in the first quarter, finally found its footing in the second. The Mustangs put together a 10-play, 83-yard drive late in the half, which was finished by a 17-yard touchdown scramble by their own dynamic quarterback, Ty Dieffenbach. The score cut the deficit to 14-7.
Any momentum for the visitors was short-lived, however. Idaho State’s offense responded with a clinical two-minute drill before halftime. Cooke efficiently moved the Bengals 75 yards in just seven plays, with running back Dason Brooks plunging in from 5 yards out with just eight seconds remaining to restore a two-score lead at 21-7 heading into the break.
The third quarter saw both teams trade field goals. Idaho State’s Trajan Sinatra connected from 19 yards after a long drive stalled at the Cal Poly 2-yard line. Cal Poly’s Noah Serna answered with a 36-yard kick, making the score 24-10.
Idaho State extended its lead early in the fourth quarter with another Sinatra field goal, this time from 20 yards, pushing the advantage to 27-10.
Cal Poly mounted a final push late in the game. Dieffenbach engineered a 12-play, 80-yard touchdown drive, finding Fidel Tau Pitts on a 15-yard scoring pass with 2:25 remaining to pull within 27-17.
The Mustangs attempted an onside kick, but it was recovered by Idaho State. The Bengals then effectively sealed the game by handing the ball to backup quarterback Davis Harsin, who rushed for 31 yards on four carries to run out the clock.
Cooke was the engine for the Bengals’ offense, completing 27 of 37 passes for 275 yards and one touchdown while also adding 38 yards and a score on the ground. His favorite targets were a committee of receivers, with Jonah Burton catching six passes for 69 yards, Damien Morgan hauling in six for 58, and Shulikov making four grabs for 72 yards and a touchdown.
Brooks was a workhorse in the backfield, carrying the ball 20 times for 106 yards and a touchdown.
For Cal Poly, Dieffenbach was the focal point, though his efforts were not enough. He passed for 172 yards and a touchdown and was the team’s leading rusher with 142 yards and another score on 18 carries. Michael Briscoe was his top receiver, catching five passes for 81 yards.
The loss extends a difficult stretch for Cal Poly, which has now dropped three of its last four games. Idaho State, meanwhile, has won two of its last three as it looks to build momentum heading into the final weeks of the season.
Cal Poly travels to face Northern Arizona next Saturday, while Idaho State returns to the ICCU Dome to host Weber State.
