Eastern Washington at Montana

MISSOULA, Mont. (Interstat) — In a hard-fought Big Sky Conference battle defined by explosive plays and a resilient defensive stand, the Montana Grizzlies preserved their perfect season, holding off the Eastern Washington Eagles 29-24 on Saturday at a raucous Washington-Grizzly Stadium.

The Grizzlies, now 10-0, built an early lead and withstood a furious fourth-quarter rally from the Eagles, who fell to 4-6. The victory was secured only after Eastern Washington’s final drive, which reached the Montana 5-yard line, ended with a fumble as time expired.

Montana quarterback Keali’i Ah Yat was the catalyst for the victory, efficiently directing the offense. The Kaneohe, Hawaii, native completed 22 of 30 passes for 250 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for another score. His favorite target was versatile playmaker Michael Wortham, who caught five passes for 81 yards and a touchdown, adding 75 yards on kick returns.

The Grizzlies set the tone early, capitalizing on a short field after a 60-yard punt return by Drew Deck. Ah Yat connected with Wortham on a 12-yard touchdown pass to open the scoring. After forcing an Eastern Washington field goal attempt that missed, Montana marched down the field again, with Ah Yat finding Korbin Hendrix for a 29-yard scoring strike to take a 14-0 lead after the first quarter.

Eastern Washington quarterback Jake Schakel of Puyallup, Washington, refused to let his team fade, putting together a prolific performance. He completed 43 of 63 passes for 451 yards and two touchdowns, relentlessly targeting receivers Miles Williams and Cole Pruett. Williams hauled in 11 catches for 136 yards, while Pruett caught 10 passes for 133 yards and a touchdown.

The Eagles clawed back into the game in the second quarter. Schakel engineered a drive capped by a 10-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Allen III. After Montana answered with a 3-yard Ah Yat touchdown run and a successful two-point conversion, the Eagles responded just before halftime. Allen III plunged into the end zone from 10 yards out, cutting the Montana lead to 22-14 at the break.

Montana extended its lead in the third quarter when running back Eli Gillman broke free for a 25-yard touchdown run, making the score 29-14. Gillman, from Dassel, Minnesota, finished with 83 yards on 13 carries. Eastern Washington could only manage a 24-yard Soren McKee field goal in the period, narrowing the gap to 29-17.

The fourth quarter became a defensive struggle until the final minutes. The Grizzlies’ defense, led by interceptions from Kenzel Lawler and Hayden Schwartz, repeatedly stymied Eagle drives. Schwartz’s interception in the end zone with 6:28 remaining seemed to seal the game, but Montana’s offense was unable to run out the clock.

Given one last chance, Schakel led a masterful 92-second drive, culminating in an 8-yard touchdown pass to Pruett with 1:01 left, pulling the Eagles to within five points. The ensuing onside kick was recovered by Eastern Washington, setting up a dramatic final sequence.

Schakel moved the Eagles to the Montana 5-yard line with eight seconds remaining. On the final play, however, he was sacked and fumbled, and the ball was recovered by the Eagles well behind the line of scrimmage as the clock hit zero, sealing the win for Montana.

The Grizzlies’ perfect season survived its toughest conference test to date, while the Eagles’ valiant effort in a hostile environment fell just short. Montana travels to face Portland State next Saturday, while Eastern Washington returns home to host Northern Colorado.
