Lehigh Stays Unbeaten With Shutout of Georgetown
BETHLEHEM, Pa. (Interstat) — On a crisp Saturday afternoon at Goodman Stadium, the Lehigh Mountain Hawks delivered a commanding performance, overwhelming the Georgetown Hoyas 41-0 to remain undefeated on the season.
From the opening kickoff, the Mountain Hawks, now 9-0, established control, while the Hoyas, falling to 5-4, struggled to find any offensive rhythm against a stifling Lehigh defense.
Lehigh’s offense was methodical and multifaceted, scoring in every quarter. The Mountain Hawks opened the scoring late in the first quarter when running back Jaden Green, a sophomore from San Francisco, broke through the middle for a 15-yard touchdown run. Nick Garrido’s successful point-after attempt gave Lehigh a 7-0 lead with 9:33 remaining in the period.
The second quarter saw the Mountain Hawks extend their dominance. Luke Yoder, a running back from Palm Harbor, Fla., capped a drive with a 6-yard touchdown run at the 10:46 mark. Garrido’s kick made it 14-0. Later in the quarter, Yoder broke the game wide open, exploding for a 41-yard touchdown run with 7:01 left on the clock. The point-after attempt failed, sending the teams into halftime with Lehigh leading 20-0.
Any hope of a Georgetown comeback was extinguished early in the third quarter. On the Hoyas’ second possession of the half, Lehigh defensive back Aidan Singleton from Port Saint Lucie, Fla., intercepted a pass from Georgetown quarterback Dez Thomas II and returned it 26 yards for a touchdown. Connor Poole’s kick extended the lead to 27-0, deflating the visiting sideline.
The Mountain Hawks’ offensive showcase continued into the fourth quarter. Quarterback Hayden Johnson of Lancaster, Pa., connected with receiver Geoffrey Jamiel of West Yarmouth, Mass., on a 27-yard touchdown pass with 12:53 left in the game. Poole’s kick made it 34-0.
Lehigh’s reserves put the final touches on the victory late in the fourth quarter. Third-string quarterback Derek Morgan from Goddard, Kan., scrambled for a 9-yard touchdown run with 4:21 remaining. Canaan Kimball’s point-after concluded the scoring at 41-0.
Johnson orchestrated the Lehigh offense efficiently, completing 14 of 21 passes for 178 yards and one touchdown while adding 38 yards on seven carries. Yoder was the workhorse in the backfield, rushing eight times for 62 yards and two touchdowns. Green contributed 45 rushing yards and a score on seven attempts, and Jamiel was the leading receiver with five catches for 72 yards and a touchdown.
The story of the game, however, was the Lehigh defense. They completely shut down the Georgetown offense, forcing three turnovers and recording multiple sacks. The Hoyas were held to just 41 net rushing yards and were never able to sustain a drive into the red zone. Their deepest penetration ended in a devastating fumble at the goal line by Hassan Mahasin, which was recovered by Lehigh’s Mekhai Smith in the third quarter.
Georgetown quarterback Dez Thomas II from Houston, Texas, finished 14-of-25 for 168 yards but was under constant pressure and threw a critical interception. Jimmy Kibble was a bright spot for the Hoyas’ offense, catching five passes for 99 yards.
The loss halts a two-game winning streak for Georgetown, which had previously defeated Bucknell and Colgate. The Hoyas will look to rebound next Saturday when they host Richmond.
Lehigh, meanwhile, continues its pursuit of a perfect season. The Mountain Hawks, who were projected to win by Interstat’s ELO system with a 95.80 percent probability, will face their next test at home against Holy Cross next Saturday. The shutout victory surpassed the Interstat game simulator’s projection of a 35-23 Lehigh win. The combined point total of 41 fell under the pregame over/under line of 51.5.
