Princeton at Cornell

ITHACA, N.Y. (Interstat) — In a dramatic Ivy League contest on Saturday, Cornell erased a 17-point first-quarter deficit to defeat Princeton 20-17 at Schoellkopf Field.

The Big Red’s comeback, fueled by a gritty, multi-faceted offensive performance and a stifling second-half defense, handed the Tigers their fourth loss of the season and evened both teams’ records at 3-4.

Princeton exploded out of the gate, scoring touchdowns on its first two possessions. The Tigers’ opening drive was a methodical 10-play, 75-yard march capped by a 27-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Kai Colón to receiver Josh Robinson. On Cornell’s ensuing possession, Princeton’s Evan Haynie forced and recovered a fumble, setting up a short field. A few plays later, running back Ethan Clark punched in a 4-yard touchdown run to give the Tigers a commanding 14-0 lead with 4:13 remaining in the opening quarter.

Cornell finally got on the board early in the second quarter. After a long drive that bridged the first and second quarters, quarterback Garrett Bass-Sulpizio powered into the end zone on a 1-yard rush. Princeton responded with a drive deep into Cornell territory, but the Big Red defense held firm, forcing the Tigers to settle for a 21-yard field goal from Esteban Nunez Perez, making the score 17-7.

The momentum began to shift decisively in the third quarter. Cornell’s defense, led by key plays from linebacker James Reinbold and defensive back Johnny Williamson, tightened. Williamson forced a fumble that he recovered himself, halting a Princeton drive. The Big Red offense capitalized, with Bass-Sulpizio connecting with receiver Doryn Smith on a 5-yard touchdown pass. The failed point-after attempt left the score at 17-13.

Cornell’s defense continued to dominate in the second half, repeatedly sacking Colón and stifling the Princeton run game. The Big Red took their first lead of the game with 11:15 remaining in the fourth quarter. Bass-Sulpizio engineered a decisive drive, culminating in a 14-yard touchdown pass to tight end Ryder Kurtz, putting Cornell ahead 20-17.

Princeton had two final chances to tie or win the game. The first drive stalled near midfield. After a Cornell punt, the Tigers got the ball back at their own 20-yard line with 1:48 left on the clock. Colón completed a 38-yard deep pass to Roman Laurio to move into Cornell territory, but the drive ultimately ended with four consecutive incomplete passes from the Cornell 37-yard line, sealing the victory for the home team.

Bass-Sulpizio was instrumental in the win, completing 15 of 25 passes for 117 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for 41 yards and another score. The Cornell ground game was a workhorse, with Jordan Triplett carrying 16 times for 72 yards and John McAuliffe adding 56 yards on nine attempts.

For Princeton, Colón finished 16 of 32 for 219 yards and one touchdown. Ethan Clark was a bright spot, rushing for 89 yards and a touchdown and catching three passes for 24 yards. Roman Laurio was the primary receiving threat, hauling in four passes for 97 yards.

The loss spoiled a strong start for Princeton, which saw its offense shut out after the first quarter. The win gives Cornell momentum heading into its final stretch of Ivy League play, while Princeton will look to rebound after letting a significant early lead slip away.
