Grambling Edges Alabama A&M on Late Punt Return Touchdown

GRAMBLING, La. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by special teams and opportunistic plays, the Grambling Tigers edged the Alabama A&M Bulldogs 13-10 on Saturday at Eddie G. Robinson Memorial Stadium.

The game, a stark contrast to the high-scoring affair projected by pregame analytics, was ultimately decided by a spectacular 64-yard punt return for a touchdown by Grambling’s Delano Franklin early in the fourth quarter. The score broke a 10-10 deadlock and provided the final margin in a contest where offensive consistency was scarce.

Alabama A&M, which had been installed as a slight pregame favorite, struck first and fast. The Bulldogs took the opening kickoff and engineered a methodical drive, capped by a 27-yard field goal from David Faulk for an early 3-0 lead. The Bulldogs’ defense then forced a quick punt, setting the stage for their biggest offensive play of the day.

On their next possession, Alabama A&M quarterback JD Davis II connected with receiver Donovan Payne on a deep 43-yard touchdown pass, giving the Bulldogs a 10-0 advantage with just over three minutes gone in the first quarter. From that point on, however, the Alabama A&M offense would be stifled, managing just 123 total passing yards for the game.

Grambling, led by quarterback Hayden Benoit, began to chip away at the deficit in the second quarter. A sustained drive resulted in a 38-yard field goal from Josh McCormick, putting the Tigers on the board. Just before the half, Grambling executed a two-minute drill to perfection, moving the ball deep into Alabama A&M territory to set up a second McCormick field goal, this time from 30 yards, to cut the Bulldogs’ lead to 10-6 at the intermission.

The third quarter was a scoreless standoff, with both defenses dominating. Alabama A&M’s Courtland Taylor intercepted a Benoit pass in the first half, while Grambling’s defense recorded two interceptions of its own, with Jalen Guillard and Blake Davis each picking off Davis II.

The game’s turning point came with 7:39 remaining in the fourth quarter. After forcing an Alabama A&M punt, Grambling’s Delano Franklin fielded the kick at his own 36-yard line, found a seam and raced 64 yards for the go-ahead touchdown. The play electrified the home crowd and put the Tigers in front for the first time at 13-10.

Alabama A&M had one final opportunity to tie or take the lead, driving into Grambling territory on their ensuing possession. A 28-yard scramble by Davis II moved the Bulldogs to the Grambling 34-yard line. The drive stalled, however, as the Grambling pass rush took over, sacking Davis on consecutive plays to force a turnover on downs.

Grambling’s ground game, led by Andre Crews who rushed for 38 yards on 15 carries, then managed to run out the final three minutes of the clock to secure the victory.

With the win, Grambling improves its record to 6-3 across all competitions. The Tigers will host Bethune-Cookman next Saturday.

The loss drops Alabama A&M to 4-5 on the season. The Bulldogs will look to rebound at home against Prairie View next Saturday.
