Memphis Dominates Rice in Road Victory
HOUSTON (Interstat) — In a commanding Friday night performance, the Memphis Tigers dismantled the Rice Owls 38 to 14 at Rice Stadium, emphatically bouncing back from their first loss of the season and defying pregame expectations.
Despite entering the contest as a 13.5-point underdog, the No. 21-ranked Tigers left no doubt, scoring on their first three possessions and building a 31-point halftime lead to improve their record to 8-1. Rice fell to 4-5.
The game was a showcase for Memphis quarterback Brendon Lewis, a native of Melissa, Texas, who delivered a near-flawless homecoming. Lewis completed 18 of 22 passes for 225 yards and was equally potent on the ground, rushing for 87 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries. His dual-threat ability consistently kept the Owls’ defense off balance.
Memphis wasted no time establishing dominance. On their opening drive, Lewis engineered a methodical march downfield, capping it with an 18-yard touchdown scramble to put the Tigers up 7-0. The lead quickly ballooned when Rice quarterback Chase Jenkins fumbled a snap deep in his own territory on the ensuing possession. Memphis running back Frank Peasant punched it in from two yards out for his first of three touchdowns, giving the Tigers a 14-0 lead before the first quarter was even halfway over.
The second quarter was more of the same. Peasant added his second touchdown on a 1-yard run, and after a Rice punt, the Tigers struck quickly. A 49-yard completion from Lewis to Bryce Dorsey set up Peasant’s third score, another 1-yard plunge, to make it 28-0.
Rice finally found a response late in the first half. Jenkins led a 15-play, 75-yard drive, connecting with Aaron Turner on a 12-yard touchdown pass with just over two minutes remaining to cut the deficit to 28-7.
Any momentum the Owls carried into the locker room was swiftly extinguished. Memphis received the second-half kickoff and, though they were forced to punt, their defense made a critical play. On Rice’s next drive, Jenkins was intercepted by Memphis’ O. Cooper, who returned the ball 23 yards to the Rice 42. A few plays later, Memphis running back G. Desrosiers Jr. scored from two yards out to extend the lead to 35-7.
The Tigers added a 37-yard field goal from Gianni Spetic as time expired in the first half to account for their final points.
Rice added a consolation touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 1-yard run by Tyvonn Byars, who finished with 43 receiving yards on a key play during the drive, to bring the final score to 38-14.
Defensively, Memphis was led by linebacker Sam Brumfield, who recorded 12 tackles. Safeties Kamari Wilson and Chris Bracy were also everywhere, making 11 and 10 tackles, respectively. Wilson forced the first-quarter fumble that led to Memphis’ second touchdown.
For Rice, linebacker Andrew Awe had a game-high 12 tackles, while the defensive line, led by Blake Boenisch and Tony Anyanwu, managed to sack Lewis twice.
The victory keeps Memphis firmly in the hunt for the American Athletic Conference championship as they head into a pivotal Friday night showdown with Tulane on Nov. 7. Rice will look to get back to .500 when it hosts UAB on Nov. 8.
The announced attendance for the Halloween night game was 20,197. The combined score of 52 points went under the betting over/under of 48.5.
