Lehigh Stays Unbeaten, Dominates Fordham in Road Victory
BRONX, N.Y. (Interstat) — In a result that defied pregame expectations, the undefeated Lehigh Mountain Hawks delivered a commanding defensive performance to rout the Fordham Rams 27-6 on Saturday at Jack Coffey Field.
Entering the contest as a significant underdog according to betting lines, which had installed Fordham as a 29.5-point favorite, Lehigh instead controlled the game from the outset. The Mountain Hawks’ defense was the story of the day, consistently stifling the Fordham offense and holding the Rams to a single touchdown. The combined point total of 33 fell well short of the over/under line of 52.5, further highlighting the defensive struggle.
Lehigh improved its perfect season record to 7-0, while Fordham’s difficult season continued, dropping them to 1-5.
The Mountain Hawks set the tone early with a methodical opening drive. Starting with a 28-yard kickoff return by Jaden Green, Lehigh efficiently moved down the field. A 19-yard run by Luke Yoder and a 15-yard reception by Matt D’Avino from quarterback Hayden Johnson positioned the Mountain Hawks for an opening score. Though the drive stalled inside the red zone, kicker Nick Garrido connected on a 36-yard field goal to give Lehigh a 3-0 lead with 10:57 remaining in the first quarter.
Fordham’s offensive woes began immediately. The Rams’ first possession resulted in a three-and-out, and a theme was established when Lehigh’s Nick Peltekian returned the ensuing punt 39 yards to the Fordham 14-yard line. The Rams’ defense held, forcing a missed 38-yard field goal attempt by Garrido, but the field position battle was decisively in Lehigh’s favor throughout the half.
After a Fordham drive deep into Lehigh territory ended with a missed 51-yard field goal by Bennett Henderson early in the second quarter, the Mountain Hawks engineered the first touchdown drive of the game. Johnson, the Lancaster, Pennsylvania native, methodically led the offense, mixing runs by Yoder and Green with key completions. The drive was capped by Johnson himself, who powered into the end zone on a 1-yard quarterback sneak. Garrido’s extra point extended Lehigh’s lead to 10-0 with 4:21 left in the half, a score that would hold until the intermission.
Any hope of a Fordham comeback was extinguished in the third quarter as Lehigh’s offense found its rhythm. The Mountain Hawks took the opening possession of the second half and marched 81 yards in just six plays. The drive was punctuated by a 30-yard deep pass from Johnson to Geoffrey Jamiel, which set up a 7-yard touchdown run by Yoder, pushing the lead to 17-0.
Following another quick Fordham possession, Lehigh struck again. A 16-yard catch by Anthony Feaster and a 19-yard run by Green positioned the Mountain Hawks at the goal line. Green finished the drive with a 1-yard plunge, and with Garrido’s third successful PAT, Lehigh’s advantage ballooned to 24-0.
Fordham finally found the end zone on its subsequent drive, which was kept alive by a 19-yard reception by Jaden Allen and a 15-yard catch by Jack Betten. Quarterback Gunnar Smith of Lake Mary, Florida, eventually pushed across on a 1-yard run with 15 seconds left in the third quarter. A failed two-point conversion attempt left the score at 24-6.
Lehigh put the final points on the board in the fourth quarter, grinding down the clock with a 15-play, 75-yard drive that consumed over seven minutes of game time. The possession, which featured a 28-yard reception by Mason Humphrey and a 17-yard scramble by Johnson, culminated in a 22-yard field goal by Garrido to seal the 27-6 victory.
Statistically, Lehigh’s balanced attack was led by Johnson, who completed 17 of 26 passes for 267 yards and added 28 rushing yards and a touchdown on the ground. Yoder was a workhorse in the backfield, rushing for 79 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries. Jamiel was Johnson’s primary target, hauling in six catches for 85 yards.
For Fordham, Smith struggled under constant pressure, completing 17 of 32 passes for 203 yards and being sacked five times. His top receiver was Jabril Carter, who caught four passes for 44 yards. The Rams’ running game was held in check, managing just 75 total yards.
The win keeps Lehigh’s perfect season intact as they look ahead to a home matchup against Georgetown on Nov. 1. Fordham will aim to regroup on the road against Richmond the same day.
