Ohio Bobcats Rally Past Eastern Michigan Eagles in Fourth Quarter

YPSILANTI, Mich. (Interstat) — In a game defined by offensive fireworks and a dramatic fourth-quarter stand, the Ohio Bobcats edged the Eastern Michigan Eagles 28-21 on Saturday at Rynearson Stadium, overcoming a shaky start and a relentless defensive effort from the home team.

The victory pushed Ohio to an even 3-3 record across all competitions, while Eastern Michigan fell to 2-5.

The contest was a tale of two halves, with the first quarter featuring a rapid exchange of scores. Eastern Michigan struck first, capping an efficient opening drive with a 38-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Noah Kim to N. Devereaux. Ohio answered immediately, with quarterback Parker Navarro engineering a methodical drive that ended with a 28-yard touchdown connection to wide receiver Chase Hendricks.

The Eagles responded in kind, as Kim showcased his dual-threat ability by finishing a drive with a 3-yard touchdown run, giving Eastern Michigan a 14-7 lead. The second quarter, however, devolved into a defensive struggle. Both teams traded punts and forced critical stops, with the Eagles’ defense making key plays to halt Ohio’s progress. The Bobcats drove deep into Eastern Michigan territory just before halftime, but a crucial interception by Eagles defensive back Tyrelle Deener in the end zone preserved the Eagles’ seven-point lead heading into the break.

The momentum shifted decisively in the third quarter. Ohio’s defense stiffened, forcing a punt on Eastern Michigan’s first possession. The Bobcats then embarked on a marathon 16-play, 80-yard drive that consumed over eight minutes of the clock. The drive was a testament to their ground game, featuring a heavy dose of running back Sieh Bangura, who finally punched it in from one yard out to tie the game at 14.

Ohio carried that momentum into the fourth quarter. After forcing a quick three-and-out, the Bobcats needed just three plays to find the end zone again. Navarro hit Hendricks on a short pass that the receiver turned into a 14-yard touchdown, giving Ohio its first lead of the game at 21-14.

The Bobcat defense then made the game’s pivotal play. With Eastern Michigan driving near midfield, Ohio’s Pius Odjugo forced a fumble from Kim, which was recovered by linebacker Charlie Christopher. The turnover led to another Ohio touchdown, a 2-yard run by Bangura that extended the lead to 28-14 with just over two minutes remaining.

Eastern Michigan refused to go quietly. Kim led a lightning-fast, 75-yard drive in just 24 seconds, culminating in a 17-yard touchdown pass to Devereaux to pull within a score at 28-21. The Eagles’ ensuing onside kick attempt, however, was recovered by Ohio. The Bobcats were then able to run out the clock with a series of kneel-downs to secure the road victory.

Ohio’s offense was led by a stellar performance from quarterback Parker Navarro. The junior from Tempe, Arizona, was highly efficient through the air, completing 23 of 28 passes for 315 yards and two touchdowns. He also contributed significantly on the ground, rushing for 63 yards on 17 carries. His primary target was Chase Hendricks, who hauled in 10 receptions for 112 yards and two touchdowns. Rodney Harris II provided a deep threat, catching six passes for 103 yards. The ground game was anchored by Sieh Bangura, who rushed for 100 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries.

For Eastern Michigan, quarterback Noah Kim from Centreville, Virginia, kept his team in the game with a strong outing, throwing for 259 yards and two touchdowns on 21-of-30 passing, while adding 30 rushing yards and another score. The Eagles’ defense was led by a massive individual effort from safety Bryce Llewellyn of McCordsville, Indiana, who recorded 13 total tackles. Defensive back Jason Marshall from Trenton, Michigan, also had a busy day with 10 tackles.

The result defied the pregame betting lines, which had installed Eastern Michigan as an 11.5-point favorite. The combined score of 49 points also fell well under the over/under line of 59.5. The game was a much-needed rebound for Ohio following a loss to Ball State two weeks prior, while Eastern Michigan’s struggles continued despite a valiant effort against the projected point spread.

Ohio will look to build on the win when they host Miami (Ohio) on Tuesday, Nov. 4. Eastern Michigan will have a bye week before returning to action at home against Bowling Green on Saturday, Nov. 8.
