Baylor at Cincinnati
CINCINNATI (Interstat) — The Cincinnati Bearcats, fueled by a dominant ground attack and a stifling defensive performance, overpowered the Baylor Bears 41-20 on Saturday at a rain-dampened Nippert Stadium before a crowd of 38,007.
Quarterback Brendan Sorsby was the catalyst for the Bearcats, accounting for three touchdowns. The Corinth, Texas, native threw for two scores and rushed for another, amassing 111 yards through the air on 13-of-21 passing while leading the team with 85 rushing yards on 11 carries. His backfield partner, Tawee Walker, was equally effective, grinding out 84 yards and a touchdown on 19 attempts.
Cincinnati set the tone early, marching 75 yards on the game’s opening possession, capped by Walker’s 1-yard plunge. After forcing a Baylor punt, the Bearcats engineered another long drive, this one covering 68 yards and ending with a 5-yard touchdown run by Emory Pryor to take a 14-0 lead late in the first quarter.
Baylor, which entered the game as a 3.5-point favorite according to the betting lines, struggled to find its footing against a relentless Cincinnati defense. The Bears finally broke through just before halftime. Quarterback Sawyer Robertson orchestrated a 75-yard drive in the final two minutes, connecting with tight end Michael Trigg on a 6-yard touchdown pass with 16 seconds remaining. The two-point conversion attempt failed, sending the teams into the break with Cincinnati leading 24-14.
The Bearcats’ defense was the story of the day, consistently harassing Robertson and limiting the Baylor offense. Trevon Gola-Callard led a swarming unit with 11 tackles, while linebackers Jack Dingle, Jake Golday, and Jonathan Thompson each recorded six tackles. The defense also forced a critical turnover in the second quarter when Logan Wilson stripped Baylor receiver Ashtyn Hawkins and recovered the fumble, setting up a Cincinnati field goal.
After Baylor closed the gap to 27-20 early in the fourth quarter on Robertson’s 1-yard touchdown run, Cincinnati slammed the door shut. Sorsby broke the game open with a 23-yard touchdown scramble midway through the final period, extending the lead to 34-20. On the ensuing kickoff, a fumble by Baylor’s Kole Wilson was recovered by Cincinnati’s Jiquan Sanks, and two plays later, Sorsby hit Isaiah Johnson for an 8-yard touchdown pass to put the game out of reach.
Robertson finished 18-of-26 for 137 yards with two touchdowns for Baylor, but was sacked twice and consistently pressured. Running back Michael Turner provided a bright spot for the Bears, rushing for 90 yards on 14 carries.
The victory improves Cincinnati’s record to 5-1 on the season, while Baylor falls to 4-2. The Bearcats’ potent offense, which accumulated over 200 yards on the ground, and a defense that held Baylor to just six points in the second and third quarters combined, proved too much for the visiting Bears to overcome. The final score defied the pregame projections from Interstat, which gave Cincinnati a 56.3% chance to win and projected a 32-25 Bearcats victory. The total of 61 points fell under the over/under line of 67.5.
Cincinnati travels to face Utah next Saturday, while Baylor returns home to host UCF.
