Auburn Rallies Past Arkansas With Late Surge
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (Interstat) — In a stunning reversal fueled by a dominant ground game and a series of critical fourth-quarter takeaways, the Auburn Tigers erased a double-digit deficit to defeat the Arkansas Razorbacks 33 to 24 on Saturday afternoon at a stunned Razorback Stadium.
The Tigers, who entered the game as a slight underdog according to sportsbooks, improved to 3-3 on the season, while Arkansas fell to 2-4.
Auburn’s victory was authored primarily by the relentless legs of running back Jeremiah Cobb and the opportunistic play of its defense. Cobb was the workhorse for the Tigers, carrying the ball 28 times for 153 bruising yards, consistently moving the chains and controlling the clock, particularly in the second half.
The game’s momentum swung violently in the final quarter, with Auburn defensive back Rayshawn Pleasant serving as the primary catalyst. With Auburn clinging to a 26-24 lead and Arkansas driving near midfield, Pleasant intercepted a pass from Arkansas quarterback Taylen Green and returned it 49 yards for a touchdown. The pick-six, which occurred with 9:15 remaining in the game, extended Auburn’s lead to nine points and effectively sealed the victory.
Pleasant was not finished, however. He secured his second interception of the quarter with just over four minutes left, snuffing out another potential Arkansas rally. The Auburn defense harassed Green throughout the afternoon, sacking him three times, with linebacker Xavier Atkins recording two of those sacks as part of his game-high 13 tackles.
The contest began as a defensive struggle, with Auburn taking a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter on a 23-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jackson Arnold to wide receiver Cam Coleman. The Tigers extended their lead to 10-0 early in the second quarter on an Alex McPherson field goal.
From there, the game appeared to turn completely in Arkansas’s favor. The Razorbacks erupted for 21 points in a dominant second quarter. The outburst began with a 58-yard touchdown strike from Green to Raylen Sharpe. Arkansas then took a 14-10 lead on a 2-yard scoring run by Braylen Russell.
The most dramatic play of the half came just before the intermission. With Auburn driving in Arkansas territory, Arnold’s pass was intercepted by defensive back Kani Walker, who returned it 89 yards for a touchdown, sending the home crowd into a frenzy and giving the Razorbacks a 21-10 halftime advantage.
Auburn regrouped at halftime, leaning heavily on Cobb and a quarterback change. Ashton Daniels replaced Arnold and provided a spark with his dual-threat ability, rushing for 35 yards and completing 6 of 8 passes for 77 yards. The Tigers methodically chipped away at the lead with McPherson field goals on three consecutive possessions in the third and early fourth quarters, cutting the deficit to 24-19.
After Pleasant’s interception return for a touchdown gave Auburn the lead for good, McPherson added two more field goals to provide the final margin. The Auburn kicker was perfect on the afternoon, connecting on all four of his field goal attempts and three extra points.
Despite the loss, Arkansas had several standout performances. Green completed 14 of 22 passes for 268 yards and a touchdown, but his three fourth-quarter interceptions proved fatal. His favorite target was Rohan Jones, who hauled in three receptions for 127 yards. The Razorbacks’ defense was led by linebacker Stephen Dix Jr., who racked up 12 tackles, and safety Caleb Wooden, who added 10.
The Tigers’ comeback victory snaps a two-game losing streak and provides a crucial boost as they enter the heart of their Southeastern Conference schedule. They will host Kentucky next Saturday. Arkansas, which has now lost four of its last five games, will look to regroup when it hosts Mississippi State next Saturday.
The final score defied the pregame projections from Interstat, whose game simulator had predicted a 25-23 Arkansas victory and whose ELO system gave the Razorbacks a 68.5 percent probability to win. The combined point total of 57 also went under the betting over/under line of 55.5.
