North Texas rolls past Charlotte behind Mestemaker’s 608-yard passing performance

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Interstat) — In a stunning reversal of pregame expectations, the North Texas Mean Green delivered an offensive masterclass, dismantling the Charlotte 49ers 54-20 on Friday night at Jerry Richardson Stadium.

The game, played on Oct. 24, 2025, was projected to be a tight contest, with one national simulator even predicting a one-point victory for the home team. Instead, North Texas quarterback Drew Mestemaker authored a historic performance, propelling the Mean Green to a dominant victory that defied the odds after Charlotte had been installed as a 26.5-point favorite.

Mestemaker, a junior from Austin, Texas, was nearly flawless, completing 37 of 49 passes for a staggering 608 yards and four touchdowns. His arm picked apart the Charlotte secondary from start to finish, fueling a North Texas offense that amassed over 700 total yards.

The game began with a hint of the shootout some had anticipated. North Texas struck first, with Mestemaker connecting with Chris Dorner on a 41-yard touchdown pass just over two minutes into the game. Charlotte responded with a methodical 15-play drive that culminated in a 24-yard field goal from Liam Boyd. The 49ers then took their first and only lead of the night late in the opening quarter when quarterback Grayson Loftis found a streaking Javen Nicholas for a 33-yard touchdown, making the score 10-7.

That lead was short-lived. North Texas, demonstrating the poise of a team with championship aspirations, answered with 17 unanswered points. Following a 29-yard field goal from Kyle Nguma, Mestemaker engineered another scoring drive, capping it with a 6-yard touchdown pass to running back Camar Hawkins to extend the lead to 17-10.

Charlotte’s explosive receiver, Javen Nicholas, provided a momentary spark for the 49ers, taking a short pass from Loftis and turning it into a 64-yard touchdown to tie the game at 17-17 in the second quarter. Nicholas was a bright spot in a difficult night for Charlotte, finishing with seven receptions for 187 yards and two touchdowns.

The Mean Green, however, were undeterred. Just before halftime, Mestemaker led another scoring march, finding Hawkins again for a 6-yard touchdown pass to give North Texas a 24-17 lead at the break, a lead they would not relinquish.

Any hope of a Charlotte comeback was extinguished in the second half as the North Texas defense tightened and the offense continued its relentless assault. The 49ers managed only a 20-yard Boyd field goal in the third quarter. North Texas, meanwhile, added a 1-yard touchdown run from Kevin Sibley and a 41-yard Nguma field goal to push the lead to 34-20 heading into the final period.

The fourth quarter turned into a rout. Mestemaker threw his fourth touchdown pass of the night, a 7-yarder to Hawkins, and then unleashed a 70-yard scoring strike to wideout Wayne Young. Sibley broke free for a 45-yard touchdown run, and backup running back A.J. Gray added a 32-yard score in the closing minutes to complete the 27-point fourth-quarter explosion.

Defensively, North Texas was led by safety Quinton Hammonds, who recorded eight tackles. Linebacker Trey Fields added seven tackles, while the defensive line generated consistent pressure, with Ethan Day and Jalyn Durgan each recording a sack.

For Charlotte, Loftis finished 20 of 36 for 295 yards and two touchdowns but was sacked three times and under constant duress. The 49ers’ defense, which entered the game as a heavy favorite, was on its heels all night. Linebacker Reid Williford recorded seven tackles and two sacks, while defensive back Yamil Talib had an interception, but the unit had no answer for Mestemaker’s precision and the Mean Green’s offensive firepower.

The victory improves North Texas to 5-1 on the season, continuing their impressive run that includes recent blowout wins over Texas-San Antonio and Washington State. The loss drops Charlotte to a disappointing 1-5, extending a losing streak that now stands at three games.

North Texas will look to continue its winning ways when it hosts Navy on Nov. 1. Charlotte, searching for answers, has a bye next week before traveling to face East Carolina on Nov. 8.
