McQuaide Leads Wildcats to Rout of Hampton
BRYN MAWR, Pa. (Interstat) — Pat McQuaide was nearly perfect, dissecting the Hampton defense with surgical precision as the Villanova Wildcats scored on their first seven possessions en route to a commanding 56-14 victory over the Hampton Pirates on Saturday at Villanova Stadium.
The game was effectively decided by halftime, with the Wildcats erupting for 49 points in the first half. McQuaide, a junior quarterback from Solon, Ohio, was the catalyst, completing 10 of 13 passes for 166 yards and a career-high five touchdowns before the break. He connected with five different receivers for scores, showcasing a diverse and potent offensive attack.
Villanova’s offense operated with ruthless efficiency from the opening kickoff. After a methodical opening drive, McQuaide capped it with a 1-yard touchdown run to give the Wildcats an early lead. Hampton’s offense, struggling to find any rhythm, was forced to punt on its first possession. On Villanova’s very next offensive play, McQuaide found a wide-open Chris Colby for a 65-yard touchdown strike, extending the lead to 14-0.
The Wildcats’ defense and special teams consistently provided the offense with excellent field position, and McQuaide continued to capitalize. He engineered another scoring drive late in the first quarter, finishing it with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Lucas Kopecky of Rocky Hill, New Jersey, to make it 21-0.
The second quarter was more of the same. McQuaide needed only three plays to find the end zone again, hitting Luke Colella of Wexford, Pennsylvania, for a 34-yard score. After a Hampton fumble was returned 53 yards for a touchdown by Villanova’ Obinna Nwobodo, McQuaide added two more touchdown passes before halftime. He found tight end Antonio Johnson of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, from 10 yards out and then connected with Sean Brodnik on a 4-yard score with 1:50 left in the half, sending the Wildcats into the locker room with a 49-0 advantage.
Hampton’s offense, led primarily by quarterback Braden Davis of Middletown, Delaware, was stifled for the first 30 minutes, managing just 95 total yards and six first downs against a swarming Villanova defense.
The Pirates showed signs of life in the second half. They put together a 13-play, 71-yard drive in the third quarter, culminating in a 3-yard touchdown pass from Davis to running back Gracen Goldsmith of Hamilton, Ohio. Hampton added a second score in the fourth quarter on a spectacular 66-yard touchdown run by backup quarterback Earl Woods III of Bessemer, Alabama, who provided a spark with 102 rushing yards on just seven carries.
Villanova’s final touchdown came from running back Eli Smith of Houston, Texas, who broke free for a 15-yard scoring run midway through the fourth quarter to cap the day’s scoring at 56-14.
The Wildcats amassed 486 yards of total offense, with a balanced attack of 242 rushing yards and 244 through the air. Backup quarterback Tanner Maddocks of Reading, Pennsylvania, contributed 67 rushing yards on five carries in relief duty.
For Hampton, the offensive struggles were pronounced outside of Woods’ explosive run. Davis completed 10 of 17 passes for just 66 yards, one touchdown and one interception. The Pirates fell to 2-5 on the season, while Villanova improved to 4-2.
The victory sets up a key conference matchup for the Wildcats next Saturday when they host Albany. Hampton will look to regroup at home against Monmouth. The lopsided result was even more decisive than projections from Interstat, whose game simulator had predicted a 36-23 Villanova win and gave the Wildcats a 97.90 percent probability of victory according to its ELO system.
