Princeton at Brown

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Interstat) — Kai Colón passed for two touchdowns and Ethan Clark rushed for 120 yards and a score to power the Princeton Tigers to a decisive 40-21 victory over the Brown Bears on Saturday at Stevenson Field.

The Tigers, who improved to 2-2, controlled the game from the outset, methodically building a lead and capitalizing on a stifling defense that intercepted Brown quarterback James Murphy three times. The Bears, who entered the contest with a 3-0 record, fell to 3-1 as their offense struggled to find consistency against a relentless Princeton pass rush and secondary.

Princeton set the tone on the game’s opening drive, marching 85 yards on 15 plays. The drive, which consumed more than half of the first quarter, was capped by a 3-yard touchdown pass from Colón to Jackson Green. Brown responded quickly, with Matt Childs breaking free for a 27-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 7.

The Tigers reclaimed the lead before the end of the first quarter on a 37-yard field goal from Esteban Nunez Perez. The second quarter saw both teams trade scores, with Brown’s Qwentin Brown plunging in for a 1-yard touchdown run. Princeton answered with a 20-yard scoring strike from Colón to Josh Robinson. The Tigers added another Nunez Perez field goal, this time from 29 yards, as time expired in the half to take a 20-14 lead into the break.

Any momentum Brown hoped to generate after halftime was swiftly extinguished by the Princeton defense. On Brown’s first possession of the third quarter, Murphy was intercepted by Torian Roberts, his second pick of the game. The Tigers capitalized on the short field, with Asher Weiner scoring on a 1-yard run. The two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving the score at 26-14.

Princeton put the game out of reach later in the third quarter. A 34-yard run by Kai Honda set up a 12-yard touchdown scamper by Ethan Clark, extending the Tigers’ advantage to 33-14.

Brown showed a flicker of life early in the fourth quarter, with Childs scoring his second touchdown of the day on a 1-yard run to cut the deficit to 33-21. But Princeton’s offense immediately responded, engineering a drive that ended with Honda scoring from 2 yards out to re-establish a three-score lead at 40-21.

The Bears’ final attempts at a comeback were thwarted by another Murphy interception, this one by Nasir Hill, and a relentless Princeton pass rush that recorded multiple sacks in the closing minutes.

Colón, a junior from Middletown, New York, finished an efficient 19 of 29 for 212 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Clark, from Clarkston, Michigan, was the workhorse on the ground, averaging over 7 yards per carry on his 17 attempts. Robinson was Colón’s primary target, hauling in 8 passes for 91 yards and a touchdown.

For Brown, Murphy, of Reading, Massachusetts, was under constant pressure, completing 22 of 35 passes for 173 yards with no touchdowns and three interceptions before being relieved by Will Currid late in the game. Childs was a bright spot for the Bears, rushing for 94 yards and two touchdowns while adding four receptions for 29 yards.

The result was an upset according to pregame projections. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a much closer final score of Princeton 26, Brown 21, and its ELO system gave the Bears a 57.40 percent probability to win.

Princeton will look to build on this win when it hosts Harvard next Saturday. Brown will aim to rebound on the road against Cornell, also next Saturday.
