Western Carolina Routs Furman in SoCon Matchup
CULLOWHEE, N.C. (Interstat) — In a stunning Southern Conference reversal of fortune, the Western Carolina Catamounts dismantled the previously one-loss Furman Paladins 52-7 on Saturday at E.J. Whitmire Stadium.
The game, projected to be a nail-biter by Interstat, which gave Western Carolina a 70.8 percent probability to win and simulated a 30-29 final, instead became a comprehensive rout. The Catamounts, now 3-3, erupted for 24 points in the second quarter to seize control and never looked back, handing Furman its first loss and dropping the Paladins to 4-1.
Western Carolina quarterback Taron Dickens, a 5-foot-11, 175-pound sophomore from Miami, Florida, orchestrated the offensive explosion. He was ruthlessly efficient, completing 17 of 24 passes for 220 yards and four touchdowns while adding 48 yards on seven carries. His performance spearheaded an offense that found its rhythm after a sluggish start.
The first quarter was a defensive struggle, ending with no score on the board. The Catamounts broke the deadlock early in the second quarter with a 44-yard field goal from Marcus Trout. The floodgates opened shortly thereafter. Dickens connected with Michael Rossin on a 50-yard touchdown strike to extend the lead. He then capped another drive with a 9-yard touchdown pass to Josh Perry, making it 17-0.
The Paladins, who entered the game as a 3.5-point pregame favorite, saw their hopes further dashed just before halftime. With under two minutes to play, Furman quarterback Trey Hedden’s pass was intercepted by cornerback Ken Moore Jr., who returned it for a touchdown, pushing the Western Carolina lead to 24-0.
Furman managed to get on the board just before the break, as Hedden found tight end Joshua Burrell for an 8-yard touchdown pass with 13 seconds remaining. That lone score provided a brief respite but did little to change the game’s momentum.
Any thought of a Furman comeback was extinguished in the third quarter. Dickens continued his masterful day, hitting Malik Knight for a 41-yard touchdown. Running back Markel Townsend, who finished with 53 yards on 10 carries, then punched in a 12-yard touchdown run to give the Catamounts a commanding 38-7 lead heading into the final period.
The Western Carolina defense was relentless, forcing four turnovers. Moore Jr., a cornerback from Miami, Florida, was a standout with two interceptions, including his pick-six. Hasaan Sykes also recorded an interception, while defensive end Justin Wallace was instrumental in the pass rush, contributing to a unit that consistently harassed Hedden.
Backup quarterback Isaac Lee put the final exclamation point on the victory for the Catamounts, breaking free for a 66-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Lee, a 6-foot-4, 175-pound freshman from Concord, North Carolina, finished with 64 rushing yards on just two carries.
For Furman, Hedden, a 6-foot-3, 231-pound quarterback from Tampa, Florida, struggled under constant pressure. He completed 18 of 35 passes for 208 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions. His primary target was Ethan Harris, who hauled in six catches for 95 yards. The Paladins’ ground game was led by Gavin Hall, who rushed for 68 yards on 17 carries, and Ben Croasdale, who added 72 yards on six attempts, though much of his production came in the game’s final minutes.
The loss halts Furman’s four-game winning streak, which included victories over East Tennessee State, Samford, Campbell, and William & Mary. Western Carolina, meanwhile, builds on the momentum of a 23-21 road win at Wofford the previous week.
The total points scored, 59, went under the over/under line of 65.5.
Furman will look to rebound next Saturday when they travel to face Wofford. Western Carolina, now riding a two-game winning streak, will hit the road to take on The Citadel.
