South Dakota State stays unbeaten, rolls past Northern Iowa

BROOKINGS, S.D. (Interstat) — In a commanding display of defensive dominance and offensive efficiency, the South Dakota State Jackrabbits methodically dispatched the visiting Northern Iowa Panthers 31 to 3 on a crisp Saturday afternoon at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium.

The victory on Oct. 11, 2025, extended South Dakota State’s perfect season record to five wins and no losses, solidifying its status as a national powerhouse. Northern Iowa, meanwhile, saw its record fall to two wins and three losses, continuing a challenging stretch in its schedule.

The game unfolded as a stark contrast to the pregame projections from Interstat, which had forecast a high-scoring affair with South Dakota State winning 36 to 26. Instead, the Jackrabbits’ defense authored a masterpiece, intercepting four Northern Iowa passes and relentlessly harassing Panther quarterbacks throughout the contest.

South Dakota State set the tone on its opening possession, embarking on a marathon 16-play drive that consumed over half of the first quarter. The methodical march was capped by a 2-yard touchdown run by quarterback Chase Mason, giving the Jackrabbits an early 7 to 0 lead. The drive showcased the offensive balance South Dakota State would maintain all day, mixing runs from workhorse back Julius Loughridge with timely passes from Mason.

Northern Iowa’s best opportunity to answer came on the ensuing drive. Panthers quarterback Matthew Schecklman engineered a promising push, connecting with Tysen Kershaw on a 31-yard pass and using his own legs to move the chains, driving deep into Jackrabbit territory as the first quarter expired. But the South Dakota State defense stiffened, and the drive ultimately stalled. A 36-yard field goal attempt by Max Bartachek was blocked by Cody Cotton, preserving the Jackrabbits’ 7 to 0 advantage early in the second quarter.

The Panthers finally got on the board later in the period. Another sustained drive, fueled by Schecklman’s arm and the running of Bill Jackson, advanced to the South Dakota State 13-yard line. Again, the Jackrabbit defense rose to the occasion, forcing Northern Iowa to settle for a 30-yard Bartachek field goal, making the score 7 to 3.

Any momentum the Panthers gained was swiftly erased. South Dakota State responded with a clinical 75-yard scoring drive. Mason efficiently moved the offense downfield, with Loughridge breaking off a 27-yard run and Mason himself plunging in from 2 yards out for his second rushing touchdown of the half, extending the lead to 14 to 3.

The second half belonged entirely to the Jackrabbits. After a blocked punt by Northern Iowa’s Braden McShane gave the Panthers prime field position, the defense immediately snuffed out the threat. On the very next play, Aidan Dunne, who had relieved Schecklman, was intercepted in the end zone by Jalen B. Lee for a touchback.

South Dakota State put the game out of reach late in the third quarter. Mason, the Hurley, South Dakota, native, orchestrated another impressive drive, culminating in a 22-yard touchdown strike to tight end Greyton Gannon, pushing the lead to 21 to 3.

The Jackrabbits sealed the victory with ten points in the final quarter. Mason connected with another tight end, Andrew Gustad of Volin, South Dakota, on an 11-yard touchdown pass. Kicker Eli Stader of Cedar Grove, Wisconsin, later added a 30-yard field goal to produce the final margin of 31 to 3.

Mason finished an efficient day, completing 19 of 31 passes for 251 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for two scores. His receiving corps was led by Alex Bullock of Omaha, Nebraska, who hauled in five catches for 82 yards. Loughridge provided a steady ground game, rushing 19 times for 76 yards.

For Northern Iowa, the offensive struggles were pronounced. Schecklman, from Appleton, Wisconsin, passed for 125 yards but was intercepted twice. The Panthers cycled through three quarterbacks, with Dunne and Jaxon Dailey also seeing action, but the group combined for four interceptions. Jackson was a bright spot, tally 104 all-purpose yards, but the Panthers could not sustain drives against a swarming South Dakota State defense.

The Jackrabbits’ defensive unit was the story of the game, with interceptions recorded by Chase Van Tol of Tea, South Dakota, Isaiah Johnson of Chicago Heights, Illinois, Lee of Wentzville, Missouri, and Myles Green of Homewood, Illinois. Van Tol also added two sacks.

South Dakota State will look to continue its unbeaten season on the road next Saturday against Murray State. Northern Iowa returns home to Cedar Falls to host South Dakota, seeking to get back on track in Missouri Valley Football Conference play.
