Youngstown State at North Dakota

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (Interstat) — Jerry Kaminski accounted for three touchdowns and the North Dakota offense proved too potent for Youngstown State, as the Fighting Hawks secured a 35-17 victory on Saturday at the Alerus Center.

The win moves both teams to an even 3-2 record on the season, but it was North Dakota that looked the part of a contender, building a commanding first-half lead and stifling a second-half rally from the Penguins.

North Dakota set the tone early, scoring on its first two possessions. The Fighting Hawks marched 67 yards on their opening drive, capped by a 9-yard touchdown pass from Kaminski to B.J. Fleming. After forcing a quick punt, North Dakota needed just six plays to cover 59 yards, with Kaminski finding tight end Haydn Stay for a 21-yard score to take a 14-0 lead late in the first quarter.

Youngstown State answered early in the second quarter. A 54-yard kickoff return by Ky Wilson set up a short field, and quarterback Beau Brungard eventually connected with Mike Solomon on a 20-yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to 14-7.

The momentum was short-lived. On the ensuing drive, North Dakota running back Gaven Ziebarth broke free for a 51-yard touchdown run, restoring the two-score lead. The Fighting Hawks defense then forced another punt, and the offense went right back to work. Kaminski engineered another scoring drive, finishing it with his second touchdown pass to Fleming, this one from 14 yards out, to give North Dakota a 28-7 advantage heading into halftime.

The Penguins emerged from the break with renewed purpose. They opened the third quarter with a 34-yard field goal from Andrew Lastovka. Then, Brungard unleashed a 57-yard deep ball to Wilson, setting up his own 37-yard touchdown strike to Wilson on the very next play. The quick-strike scores brought Youngstown State within one possession at 28-17.

North Dakota’s defense, however, clamped down from there, and the offense reclaimed control with a methodical, clock-draining drive in the fourth quarter. The Fighting Hawks consumed over eight minutes on a 17-play, 72-yard march that was kept alive by a pair of Youngstown State pass interference penalties in the end zone. Ziebarth finally punched it in from a yard out for his second rushing touchdown, sealing the game with 6:40 remaining.

Kaminski, the North Dakota quarterback from Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, efficiently managed the game, completing 17 of 27 passes for 146 yards and three touchdowns while adding 27 yards on the ground. The ground game was led by Sawyer Seidl of Hugo, Minnesota, who rushed for 114 yards on 20 carries. Ziebarth, from Cambridge, Minnesota, contributed 71 yards and two scores on just nine attempts. Fleming was Kaminski’s primary target, hauling in five catches for 84 yards and two touchdowns.

For Youngstown State, quarterback Beau Brungard of New Middletown, Ohio, put up a valiant effort in the loss, throwing for 269 yards and two touchdowns while also leading the team in rushing with 71 yards. Wide receiver Ky Wilson from Farrell, Pennsylvania, was a dynamic playmaker, catching four passes for 102 yards and a touchdown and adding 69 return yards.

The result defied the pregame projections from Interstat, whose game simulator had predicted a much closer North Dakota victory, 40-34, and gave the Fighting Hawks a 73.9 percent probability to win.

Youngstown State will look to rebound on the road next Saturday against Illinois State. North Dakota also hits the road for a matchup with Southern Illinois.

Both teams now sit at a pivotal point in their seasons, with this victory giving North Dakota an early edge in the conference standings as they navigate the heart of their schedule.
