Hawaii Rallies Past Utah State in High-Scoring Affair

HONOLULU (Interstat) — In a high-octane Mountain West Conference shootout, the Hawaii Warriors used a potent passing attack and a dominant fourth quarter to pull away from the Utah State Aggies, securing a 44-26 victory on Saturday night at a raucous Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex.

The game, which far exceeded pregame projections for offensive fireworks, saw Hawaii quarterback Micah Alejado deliver a masterful performance, throwing for 413 yards and three touchdowns, all of which landed in the hands of receiver Pofele Ashlock. The Warriors, now 4-2 overall, outscored the Aggies 17-0 in the final period to turn a competitive contest into a decisive win.

Utah State, which fell to 3-2, kept pace for three quarters behind a determined ground game and multiple quarterbacks but ultimately could not contain Hawaii’s relentless aerial assault down the stretch.

The Warriors struck first, capitalizing on early field position after a Billy Gowers punt pinned the Aggies at their own 1-yard line. A subsequent three-and-out gave Hawaii the ball back near midfield, and a methodical drive culminated in a 31-yard field goal from Kansei Matsuzawa.

Utah State answered immediately. A 15-yard run by quarterback Bryson Barnes and a key pass interference penalty on Hawaii set the Aggies up deep in Warriors territory. The drive stalled inside the 5-yard line, but Tanner Rinker connected on a 20-yard field goal to tie the game.

Hawaii’s offense then found its rhythm. Alejado connected with Brandon White on a 46-yard bomb to quickly move into the red zone, and two plays later, he found Ashlock for an 18-yard touchdown strike, giving the Warriors a 10-3 lead as the first quarter concluded.

The second quarter became a wild back-and-forth affair. Utah State’s defense provided a spark when D’Angelo Mayes intercepted an Alejado pass and returned it 22 yards to the Hawaii 40. The Aggies’ offense, however, could not capitalize and was forced to punt, again pinning the Warriors deep.

This time, the strategy paid off. After a Hawaii three-and-out, a short punt gave Utah State the ball at the Hawaii 47. The Aggies pounded the ball on the ground, with Miles Davis eventually plunging in from 1 yard out to tie the game at 10.

On the ensuing Utah State possession, a trick play caught the Warriors off guard. Backup quarterback Anthony Garcia took a reverse and launched a perfect 30-yard touchdown pass to Javen Jacobs, suddenly putting the Aggies ahead 17-10.

The lead was short-lived. Alejado engineered a rapid 63-yard drive, finishing it with a 7-yard touchdown pass to Ashlock to knot the score at 17.

After a Utah State punt, the Aggies got the ball back with just over two minutes left in the half. Quarterback Jacob Conover, now in the game, led a drive that set up a 40-yard Rinker field goal, sending Utah State into the locker room with a 20-17 advantage.

Hawaii had one last chance in the half, and Alejado made the most of it. Starting from his own 25 with just 59 seconds left, he drove the Warriors 75 yards in a clinic of two-minute offense. He capped the drive with a 31-yard touchdown pass to Ashlock with 18 seconds remaining, reclaiming the lead for Hawaii at 24-20 at the break.

Utah State came out of halftime with purpose. Barnes led a 71-yard scoring drive, connecting with Broc Lane on a 32-yard touchdown pass to put the Aggies back on top, 26-24.

The Warriors responded by moving the ball into Utah State territory, but the Aggies’ defense, led by linebacker Chris Joe who recorded two sacks on the night, stiffened. Hawaii settled for a 46-yard Matsuzawa field goal to take a slim 27-26 lead late in the third quarter.

The fourth quarter belonged entirely to the Warriors. They seized control with a 15-yard touchdown scramble by Alejado, extending their lead to 34-26. After a Utah State drive stalled, Hawaii running back Landon Sims broke free for a 43-yard run, setting up another Matsuzawa field goal, this time from 36 yards, to make it 37-26.

The Aggies’ hopes for a comeback were extinguished on their next possession. Hawaii’s defense forced a turnover on downs, and the Warriors put the game away with a methodical drive finished by Sims’ 4-yard touchdown run, his second of the game, for the final 44-26 margin.

Alejado’s 34-for-54, 413-yard performance was the engine of the Hawaii offense. Ashlock was his primary target, hauling in eight catches for 113 yards and a hat trick of touchdowns. The Warriors’ defense was led by Elijah Palmer with six tackles, while a host of players, including Jamih Otis and Peter Manuma, recorded five tackles apiece. Otis also added an interception.

For Utah State, Bryson Barnes was 14 of 26 for 175 yards and a touchdown through the air, while also leading the team with 64 rushing yards. Miles Davis added 60 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Safety Brevin Hamblin anchored the defense with a game-high eight tackles.

The victory gives Hawaii momentum as they head into a road game at Colorado State next Saturday. Utah State looks to rebound at home against San Jose State next Friday.
