Air Force at UNLV
LAS VEGAS (Interstat) — In a stunning offensive display that defied pregame projections, the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels outlasted the Air Force Falcons 51-48 in a wild Mountain West Conference shootout on Saturday afternoon at Allegiant Stadium.
The game, which featured a combined 99 points and over 1,000 yards of total offense, was a dramatic departure from the defensive struggle anticipated by oddsmakers, who had installed Air Force as a 6.5-point favorite and set an over/under line of 64.5.
UNLV quarterback Anthony Colandrea was the catalyst for the upset, orchestrating a Rebels offense that exploded for 22 points in the fourth quarter to secure the victory. The sophomore from Saint Petersburg, Florida, delivered a dynamic dual-threat performance, completing 20 of 32 passes for 361 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for 62 yards and two more scores.
His counterpart, Air Force’s Liam Szarka of Aurora, Colorado, was equally prolific in a losing effort. Szarka led the Falcons’ potent triple-option attack, rushing for 136 yards and two touchdowns and passing for 175 yards and another score.
The contest was a back-and-forth affair from the start. After trading first-quarter touchdowns, Air Force seized control in the second period, building a 21-13 halftime lead behind the powerful running of Owen Allen. The Southlake, Texas, native gashed the UNLV defense for 192 yards and two touchdowns on just 17 carries.
UNLV emerged from the locker room with renewed vigor. The Rebels capitalized on an Air Force fumble on the opening kickoff of the second half, with Jaden Bradley hitting tight end Var’Keyes Gumms for a 16-yard touchdown pass. Just minutes later, Colandrea connected with Daejon Reynolds on an 86-yard scoring strike, quickly turning the deficit into a 26-21 lead. Reynolds, from Springfield, Illinois, finished with four receptions for 139 yards and the touchdown.
The Falcons responded with a methodical drive, capped by Szarka’s 17-yard touchdown pass to Bruin Fleischmann, to reclaim the lead. The two teams continued to trade blows throughout the third and into the fourth quarter.
Air Force appeared to have the game in hand after a 4-yard touchdown run by Cade Harris extended their lead to 37-29 with just over six minutes remaining. Harris, from South Weber, Utah, was a versatile weapon, rushing for two touchdowns and catching four passes for 46 yards.
But the undefeated Rebels showed their resilience. Jai’Den Thomas broke free for a 51-yard touchdown run, and after a successful two-point conversion, the game was tied. Air Force answered immediately, with Szarka plunging in from 9 yards out to put the Falcons back on top 44-37 with just 1:13 left on the clock.
That left more than enough time for Colandrea and the UNLV offense. The Rebels marched 75 yards in just 41 seconds, with Colandrea scrambling for a 19-yard touchdown to tie the game. He then ran in the decisive two-point conversion, giving UNLV a 51-48 lead with 36 seconds remaining.
Air Force had one final chance, driving into UNLV territory to set up a potential game-tying 40-yard field goal by Jacob Medina as time expired, but the kick sailed wide, sealing the victory for the home team.
Defensively, the game was defined by tackling volume. UNLV’s secondary was busy all afternoon, led by Andrew Powdrell with 13 tackles and Jake Pope with 11. For Air Force, linebacker Blake Fletcher registered 10 tackles in the loss.
The win keeps UNLV perfect on the season, improving to 5-0. The Rebels travel to face Boise State next Saturday. Air Force, meanwhile, falls to 1-4 and will host Wyoming.
