Wildcats Upset Horned Frogs Behind Defensive, Ground Game Surge

MANHATTAN, Kan. (Interstat) — In a game defined by opportunistic defense and a dominant ground attack, the Kansas State Wildcats overcame a prolific passing performance from Texas Christian quarterback Josh Hoover to defeat the Horned Frogs 41-28 on Saturday at a rain-soaked Bill Snyder Family Stadium.

The Wildcats, who entered the game with a 1-4 record, improved to 2-4, while the Horned Frogs suffered their first loss of the season, falling to 4-1.

The contest turned decisively in the third quarter with the game tied. TCU quarterback Josh Hoover, who threw for 376 yards and three touchdowns, was intercepted by Kansas State linebacker Desmond Purnell, who returned the pick 25 yards for a touchdown, giving the Wildcats a 21-7 lead.

Kansas State’s defense delivered another critical blow on the ensuing TCU possession. On the first play from scrimmage, a botched handoff resulted in a fumble that was scooped up by Wildcats safety Wesley Fair and returned for another touchdown, stunning the Horned Frogs and extending the lead to 28-7 in a span of just 28 seconds.

“That sequence was the ballgame,“ a Kansas State spokesperson said in a postgame statement. “Our defense was flying to the ball and capitalized on the mistakes.“

Hoover and the Horned Frogs offense, which was held scoreless in the first quarter, refused to go quietly. He connected with Chase Curtis on a 2-yard touchdown pass late in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 28-14. Then, early in the fourth, he found Eric McAlister on an 85-yard scoring strike, pulling TCU within a single score at 28-21.

McAlister was Hoover’s primary deep threat, finishing with four receptions for 156 yards and two touchdowns. Ed Small also had a strong receiving day for TCU, catching six passes for 101 yards.

Kansas State responded with a methodical drive, capped by a 12-yard touchdown pass from Avery Johnson to Jerand Bradley, pushing the lead back to 35-21. Johnson was efficient for the Wildcats, completing 16 of 26 passes for 198 yards and three touchdowns, while also rushing for 29 yards.

The Wildcats’ offense was anchored by a relentless rushing attack led by Joe Jackson, who carried the ball 27 times for 110 yards, consistently grinding out first downs and controlling the clock in the second half.

After a 37-yard touchdown pass from Hoover to McAlister brought TCU to within 41-28 with 26 seconds remaining, the Horned Frogs’ comeback attempt fell short. Kansas State recovered the ensuing onside kick to seal the victory.

While Hoover amassed impressive yardage, the Kansas State defense made the plays that mattered most. Purnell was the standout, finishing with five tackles, one sack, and two interceptions, including the game-changing pick-six. The Wildcats’ defense sacked Hoover twice and consistently pressured him into mistakes.

The game’s final score of 69 points went well over the pregame over/under line of 55.5. Kansas State, which had been installed as a 2.5-point favorite, also covered the spread. The result was a reversal of the projection from Interstat’s game simulator, which had predicted a 29-27 Kansas State victory, and their ELO system, which had given TCU a slight 50.30 percent probability to win.

TCU will look to rebound next Saturday when they host Baylor. Kansas State has a bye week before traveling to face rival Kansas on Oct. 25.
