Lehigh Stays Unbeaten, Topples Previously Undefeated Yale

BETHLEHEM, Pa. (Interstat) — In a clash of unbeaten teams, the Lehigh Mountain Hawks delivered a statement victory, overpowering the Yale Bulldogs 31-13 on a brisk Saturday afternoon at Goodman Stadium. The Mountain Hawks, capitalizing on a dominant ground game and a stifling defense, improved to 5-0, while the Bulldogs suffered their first loss of the season, falling to 2-0.

The game unfolded in stark contrast to pregame projections. Interstat’s game simulator had forecast a final score of Yale 27, Lehigh 22, with the Bulldogs installed as a 3.5-point favorite. Lehigh’s ELO system, however, gave the Mountain Hawks a slight 53.90 percent probability to win, a prediction that proved far more accurate as Lehigh controlled the contest from the outset.

Lehigh set the tone immediately, marching 67 yards on the game’s opening drive. The possession was a showcase for running back Luke Yoder of Palm Harbor, Florida, who carried the ball four times for 14 yards before quarterback Hayden Johnson of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, connected with receiver Mason Humphrey of Loganville, Georgia, on a 27-yard touchdown strike. The score gave Lehigh a 7-0 lead with 11:14 remaining in the first quarter.

Yale’s offense, led by quarterback Dante Reno of Sturbridge, Massachusetts, struggled to find a rhythm against the aggressive Lehigh defense. After a quick three-and-out, the Mountain Hawks embarked on another long, methodical drive. This time, they covered 77 yards in 13 plays, chewing up over five minutes of clock. Johnson again found the end zone through the air, hitting Yoder for a 24-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead to 14-0 late in the opening quarter.

The Bulldogs finally broke through just before halftime. Reno engineered a 14-play, 71-yard drive, meticulously moving the chains. He capped the possession with a 27-yard touchdown pass to Nico Brown of Huntington Beach, California, with 43 seconds left in the half, cutting the deficit to 14-7 at the break.

Any momentum Yale carried into the locker room was swiftly extinguished in the third quarter. On Yale’s second possession of the half, Reno’s pass was intercepted by Lehigh defensive back Davis Rice of Atlanta, Georgia, who returned it to the Lehigh 14. Two plays later, the Mountain Hawks struck with explosive force. Johnson launched a deep pass to Humphrey for a 59-yard gain, and on the next snap, Yoder burst through the line for a 25-yard touchdown run, pushing the lead back to 21-7.

Yale responded with resilience. Reno led the Bulldogs on a 10-play, 80-yard drive, culminating in a 44-yard touchdown pass to Brown, his second of the day. The score brought Yale to within a single point at 21-20, but the subsequent extra point attempt was no good, leaving the Bulldogs trailing.

Lehigh answered with a drive of its own, methodically moving down the field before Nick Garrido of Easton, Pennsylvania, drilled a 24-yard field goal to make it 24-20 late in the third quarter.

The fourth quarter belonged entirely to the Mountain Hawks’ defense and rushing attack. With Yale driving and threatening to take the lead, Reno was intercepted for a second time, this time by defensive back Aidan Singleton of Port Saint Lucie, Florida, in the end zone for a touchback.

The turnover proved decisive. Lehigh’s offense then put the game away with a clock-draining, 13-play, 80-yard drive that consumed over six minutes. Johnson sealed the victory with a 9-yard touchdown run, his second of the game, with just over two minutes remaining to provide the final margin of 31-13.

Johnson was efficient for Lehigh, completing 8 of 15 passes for 174 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for 45 yards and another score. Yoder was the workhorse, amassing 108 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries, while also catching three passes for 49 yards. Humphrey’s two catches for 86 yards and a touchdown provided the deep threat.

For Yale, Reno finished 25 of 38 for 247 yards with two touchdowns and two critical interceptions. Brown was his primary target, hauling in seven passes for 85 yards and both scores. The Bulldogs’ ground game, led by Josh Pitsenberger of Bethesda, Maryland, who had 63 yards on 18 carries, was held in check by a formidable Lehigh front.

The Mountain Hawks’ defense was the story of the game, forcing two turnovers and consistently pressuring Reno, while the offense controlled the tempo with a balanced attack that accumulated over 250 rushing yards. The victory keeps Lehigh perfect on the season as they prepare for a road test at Columbia next Saturday. Yale will look to rebound from its first defeat when it travels to face Dartmouth.
