Ohio State Routs Minnesota Behind Sayin’s 3 Touchdowns

COLUMBUS, Ohio (Interstat) — In a commanding display of offensive firepower and defensive dominance, the Ohio State Buckeyes remained undefeated with a resounding 42-3 victory over the Minnesota Golden Gophers on Saturday night before a crowd of 105,114 at Ohio Stadium.

The game, played on October 4, 2025, was never in doubt after the first quarter, as the Buckeyes scored touchdowns on six of their final nine possessions while completely stifling the Golden Gophers’ offense.

Minnesota opened the game with a surprising burst of efficiency. Taking the opening kickoff, quarterback Drake Lindsey engineered a 15-play, 65-yard drive that consumed nearly seven minutes of clock. The Golden Gophers methodically moved down the field, with Lindsey connecting on short passes to Frank Bierman, Jalen Smith, and Darius Taylor before hitting tight end Jameson Geers for a 25-yard gain to the Ohio State 29. The drive stalled inside the 10-yard line, but Brady Denaburg converted a 27-yard field goal to give the visitors an early 3-0 lead.

That opening drive proved to be the high point for Minnesota. Ohio State’s offense, after a missed 53-yard field goal by Jayden Fielding on its first possession, found its rhythm late in the first quarter. Starting from their own 9-yard line, the Buckeyes needed just six plays to cover 91 yards and take a lead they would not relinquish. The drive was catalyzed by a 48-yard strike from quarterback Julian Sayin to wide receiver Carnell Tate, followed immediately by a 31-yard connection from Sayin to Jeremiah Smith. Tight end CJ Donaldson capped the drive with a 1-yard touchdown plunge, making the score 7-3 as the first quarter ended.

From there, the floodgates opened. Ohio State poured on 14 points in the second quarter to seize control. Sayin led a 10-play, 80-yard march that he finished with a 6-yard touchdown pass to Smith. After a quick three-and-out by Minnesota’s offense, the Buckeyes struck with lightning speed. On the first play of the ensuing drive, Sayin found Tate on a deep post for a 44-yard touchdown, extending the lead to 21-3.

The Ohio State defense was relentless, consistently pressuring Lindsey and shutting down the Minnesota running game. The Golden Gophers managed just 94 total yards of offense, with Lindsey completing 15 of 26 passes for that amount. The Buckeyes’ defensive unit, led by safety Sonny Styles with eight tackles and linebacker Payton Pierce with seven, allowed only six first downs the entire game. Defensive back Caleb Downs was a constant presence in the backfield, recording four tackles and a quarterback hurry, while linebacker Arvell Reese notched a sack.

Sayin, the Buckeyes’ quarterback from Carlsbad, California, was surgical in his execution. He completed 23 of 27 passes for 326 yards and three touchdowns, spreading the ball to a deep and talented receiving corps. Tate was his primary target, hauling in nine catches for 183 yards and a score. Smith was equally potent, catching seven passes for 67 yards and two touchdowns. Tight end Max Klare added five receptions for 63 yards.

The ground game complemented the aerial assault, with Bo Jackson of Cleveland leading the way with 63 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries. James Peoples of San Antonio added 59 yards on just seven attempts.

Ohio State extended its lead to 28-3 in the third quarter on a 5-yard touchdown run by Jackson, capping a short 20-yard drive set up by a poor Minnesota punt. The Buckeyes put the final exclamation point on the victory early in the fourth quarter when Sayin hit Smith for a 9-yard touchdown, his third scoring pass of the night, to make it 35-3.

Backup quarterback Lincoln Kienholz of Pierre, South Dakota, closed out the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown run with 3:49 remaining to produce the final margin of 42-3.

With the win, Ohio State improves to 4-0 on the season and will travel to face Illinois next Saturday. The loss drops Minnesota to 3-1, snapping a three-game winning streak. The Golden Gophers will look to rebound at home against Purdue next Saturday. The final score easily surpassed the pregame over/under line of 42.5 and exceeded the projection of Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a 38-15 Ohio State victory. The Buckeyes were installed as 23.5-point favorites pregame.
