Jackson State Routs Southern Behind Morgan’s 4 Touchdowns
BATON ROUGE, La. (Interstat) — In a game defined by offensive fireworks and a dominant second-half performance, the Jackson State Tigers methodically dismantled the Southern Jaguars 38 to 13 on Saturday night at Tiger Stadium.
The contest, which was projected to be a nail-biter by pregame metrics, instead became a showcase for Jackson State quarterback JaCobian Morgan and a rushing attack that Southern’s defense had no answer for. The Tigers improved their season record to 2-1, while the Jaguars fell to 1-3.
Despite being installed as a 10-point underdog by oddsmakers, Jackson State never trailed. The Tigers set the tone on their opening drive, marching 80 yards in a methodical series that culminated in a 1-yard touchdown plunge by Donerio Davenport. Southern responded with a 37-yard field goal from Nathan Zimmer, but the early sequence established Jackson State’s control at the line of scrimmage.
The second quarter provided the game’s most dramatic swings. Southern’s offense, which had struggled to find consistency, suddenly exploded. On a first-down play from his own 27-yard line, Jaguars running back Trey Holly found a seam, broke into the open field, and outraced the Tigers’ defense for a breathtaking 73-yard touchdown run. The score cut Jackson State’s lead to 7-6, and after a missed Jackson State field goal, the momentum appeared to have swung decisively toward the home team.
Jackson State, however, answered with a poised drive just before halftime. After a critical interception by Tigers defensive back Kam Sallis halted a promising Southern drive, Morgan engineered a two-minute drill with surgical precision. With just five seconds remaining on the clock, Morgan connected with receiver Ja’Naylon Dupree on a deep post route for a 51-yard touchdown strike, sending the Tigers into the locker room with a 17 to 13 lead and all the momentum.
The second half belonged entirely to Jackson State. The Tigers’ defense stiffened, shutting out the Jaguars over the final two quarters and consistently pressuring Southern quarterbacks Ashton Strother and Cam’Ron McCoy. The offensive unit, meanwhile, ground down the Southern defense with a relentless rushing attack.
Jackson State extended its lead on its first possession of the third quarter, with Davenport pounding the ball in from 3 yards out for his second touchdown of the game, pushing the score to 24 to 13. The Tigers then put the game completely out of reach in the fourth quarter. Travis Terrell Jr. capped a long drive with a 6-yard touchdown run, and Morgan later found Nate Rembert for an 82-yard catch-and-run score that sealed the comprehensive victory.
Morgan, a junior from Canton, Mississippi, was the catalyst for the Tigers’ offensive explosion. He finished the game completing 21 of 31 passes for 337 yards and two touchdowns, expertly managing the game and delivering key throws under pressure. His favorite targets were Jameel Gardner Jr., who caught seven passes for 96 yards, and the big-play duo of Rembert and Dupree. Rembert hauled in five passes for 102 yards and a score, while Dupree caught five for 93 yards and a touchdown.
The Tigers’ ground game was equally potent, amassing over 200 yards. Ahmad Miller led the way, rushing for 101 yards on 14 carries, consistently picking up first downs and keeping the chains moving. Terrell Jr. added 51 yards and a touchdown, while Davenport scored twice on short-yardage carries.
For Southern, the lone bright spot was the performance of Holly. The running back from Farmerville, Louisiana, was a home-run threat every time he touched the ball, finishing with 147 rushing yards and a touchdown on just 11 carries. Beyond Holly’s explosive play, the Jaguars’ offense sputtered. Quarterback Ashton Strother completed 10 of 20 passes for just 120 yards and was intercepted once, as the unit was plagued by penalties and negative plays.
Jackson State’s defense was credited with multiple sacks and consistently forced Southern into long-yardage situations, from which they could not recover. The Tigers’ ability to neutralize the Southern passing attack and contain everything except Holly’s breakaway run was the foundation of their road victory.
The final score of 51 total points narrowly eclipsed the pregame over/under line of 51.5. The result was a stark contrast to the projections from Interstat, whose game simulator had predicted a 34-33 Jackson State win and whose ELO system gave the Tigers a 78 percent probability to win.
Jackson State will look to build on this decisive victory when they travel to face Alabama A&M on Saturday, Oct. 4. Southern, seeking to rebound from its third consecutive loss, has a bye week before heading to Bethune-Cookman on Saturday, Oct. 11.
