Missouri rolls past UMass to stay unbeaten
BOISE, Idaho (Interstat) — The Missouri Tigers showcased a dominant and efficient performance, overwhelming the Massachusetts Minutemen 42-6 in a nonconference football game Saturday at Memorial Stadium before a crowd of 57,321.
Quarterback Beau Pribula was nearly flawless, completing 26 of 29 passes for 241 yards and a touchdown, piloting an offense that scored on six of its first seven meaningful drives. The victory pushed Missouri’s record to a perfect 4-0, while Massachusetts fell to 0-3.
The game’s outcome was never in doubt after the first quarter. Massachusetts struck first, capitalizing on a short field after a Timmy Hinspeter 63-yard interception return. Quarterback AJ Hairston connected with Max Dowling on a 2-yard touchdown pass to give the Minutemen a surprising 6-0 lead.
That early advantage was short-lived. Missouri responded with a methodical, 68-yard drive capped by a 9-yard touchdown run from Jamal Roberts. The Tigers then forced a quick punt and embarked on another long scoring march, this one ending with a 5-yard touchdown run by Ahmad Hardy to take a 14-6 lead into the second quarter.
From there, the Missouri defense took over, completely stifling the Massachusetts offense. The Minutemen struggled mightily at quarterback, with starter AJ Hairston completing just 11 of 31 passes for 75 yards, one touchdown and one interception before being relieved by Grant Jordan. As a team, Massachusetts managed just 105 total yards of offense.
The Tigers’ defensive front was relentless, generating constant pressure. Zion Young recorded three quarterback hurries, while Darris Smith and Damon Wilson II each added a sack and multiple hurries. Santana Banner sealed the defensive effort with a third-quarter interception.
Missouri extended its lead to 21-6 by halftime after another Hardy touchdown run, this one from 1 yard out, concluding a 13-play, 89-yard drive that consumed over seven minutes of the second quarter.
Any hope of a Massachusetts comeback was extinguished in the third quarter. Hardy broke free for his third touchdown of the day, a 16-yard run, to make it 28-6. Later in the quarter, Banner’s interception set up the Tigers at the Massachusetts 8-yard line. Pribula promptly found tight end Brett Norfleet for a 9-yard touchdown pass, pushing the lead to 35-6.
With the game in hand, Missouri turned to its reserves in the fourth quarter. Backup running back Tavorus Jones added a 3-yard touchdown run to complete the scoring at 42-6. Fellow reserve Marquise Davis also impressed, rushing for 77 yards on just nine carries in the final period, repeatedly breaking off long runs against a worn-down Minutemen defense.
For Massachusetts, the defensive workload was immense. Linebacker Derrieon Craig recorded a game-high 11 tackles, while Tyler Martin and Rashad Henry each had eight. The Minutemen defense was on the field for over 37 minutes of game time.
Missouri’s offense was balanced and effective. Kevin Coleman Jr. was Pribula’s primary target, hauling in 12 receptions for 108 yards. Norfleet added six catches for 52 yards and a score. On the ground, Hardy shouldered the load for much of the game before Davis’s late explosion.
The Tigers now look ahead to a pivotal SEC showdown, hosting Alabama on October 11. Massachusetts, still searching for its first win, will return home to face Western Michigan on October 4. The game’s final score of 48 total points fell under the pregame over/under line of 56.5, though Missouri easily covered the spread as 44.5-point favorites. The result was closely aligned with projections from Interstat, whose game simulator had predicted a Missouri 42-21 victory and gave the Tigers a 99.80 percent probability to win.
