Kentucky Christian at Morehead State
MOREHEAD, Ky. (Interstat) — Carter Cravens threw for four touchdowns and ran for another, leading Morehead State to a 45-28 victory over Kentucky Christian on Saturday afternoon at Jayne Stadium.
The Eagles’ offense was explosive from the start, amassing over 600 total yards and never trailing to even their season record at 2-2. Kentucky Christian fell in its season opener.
Cravens, a quarterback from Cypress, Texas, was remarkably efficient, completing 18 of 23 passes for 311 yards. His favorite target was Ryan Upp, who hauled in seven catches for 139 yards and two touchdowns. Upp’s scoring receptions covered 39 and 39 yards, the latter coming just before halftime to give the Eagles a 31-28 lead.
Morehead State’s ground game was equally dominant, racking up 293 yards. Craig Cunningham led the way with 138 yards on 20 carries, while Isaac Stopke added 102 yards and a touchdown on 13 attempts. Stopke also caught a pass for nine yards.
The Eagles struck first, capitalizing on their opening drive. Cravens connected with Montez Green for a 34-yard touchdown pass just over two minutes into the game. After a Jordan Price 25-yard field goal extended the lead to 10-0, the Knights found their footing.
Kentucky Christian answered in the second quarter with a massive play. Jovari Gamble, a running back from Russellville, Ky., broke free for a 75-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to 10-7.
The two teams then traded blows in a high-scoring second period. Stopke plunged in from 4 yards out to put Morehead State up 17-7, but Kentucky Christian quarterback Jackson Wasik began to find a rhythm. Wasik finished the game 25 of 45 for 243 yards and three touchdowns.
After an Anthony Ice 38-yard touchdown reception from Cravens made it 24-7 in favor of the Eagles, the Knights mounted a comeback. Wasik engineered a late first-half drive, culminating in a 10-yard touchdown pass to Jason Cobb with no time remaining on the clock. That score, Cobb’s second of the game, capped a wild first half and sent the teams to the locker room with Morehead State holding a narrow 31-28 advantage.
Any momentum for the visitors was extinguished in the third quarter as the Eagles’ defense stiffened and the offense continued its relentless attack. Cravens scored on a 5-yard run to cap a methodical 80-yard drive, pushing the lead to 38-28.
On their next possession, the Eagles put the game out of reach. Cravens found Upp for their second 39-yard scoring connection of the day, extending the advantage to 45-28 late in the third quarter.
Kentucky Christian added a final score in the fourth quarter on Wasik’s third touchdown pass, a 14-yarder to Cobb, but could get no closer. The Eagles’ ground game effectively drained the clock in the final minutes, with Cunningham and Stopke consistently picking up first downs to secure the win.
For the Knights, Calvin Brown was a key contributor with six receptions for 90 yards. Gamble finished with 93 rushing yards and a touchdown on just seven carries. Nehemiah Williams provided a spark in the return game, averaging over 33 yards on four returns, including a 73-yarder.
The Eagles’ defense, led by a strong pass rush that recorded multiple sacks, limited Kentucky Christian’s opportunities in the second half, allowing the offense to pull away.
Morehead State begins a road stretch next Saturday, traveling to face Presbyterian. Kentucky Christian looks to rebound in its next contest.
