Lehigh at Bucknell
LEWISBURG, Pa. (Interstat) — Lehigh remained undefeated Saturday, riding a dominant ground attack and a decisive third-quarter surge to a 41-24 victory over Bucknell in a non-conference football game that defied pregame expectations at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
The Mountain Hawks, who entered the contest as a 12.5-point underdog according to oddsmakers, improved to 4-0 for the season. The Bison fell to an even 2-2.
The game’s narrative was written on the ground, where Lehigh amassed a staggering 356 rushing yards. Running backs Luke Yoder and Jaden Green proved unstoppable, consistently gouging the Bucknell defense for large chunks of yardage. Yoder, a junior from Palm Harbor, Fla., was the workhorse, carrying the ball 18 times for 174 yards and a touchdown. Green, a sophomore from San Francisco, was the dynamo, compiling 127 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries, while also adding a receiving score.
Lehigh quarterback Hayden Johnson of Lancaster, Pa., managed the game efficiently, completing 16 of 20 passes for 171 yards and two touchdowns. His primary target was Geoffrey Jamiel, who hauled in eight catches for 102 yards.
The game began with a sign of things to come. On Bucknell’s first offensive play, quarterback Ralph Rucker IV’s pass was intercepted by Lehigh defensive back Mekhai Smith, giving the Mountain Hawks prime field position. The drive stalled, but kicker Nick Garrido of Easton, Pa., connected on a 24-yard field goal to give Lehigh an early lead.
The Mountain Hawks extended their advantage later in the first quarter. A methodical drive, powered by Yoder’s powerful runs, was capped by a 12-yard touchdown scamper from Green, making the score 10-0.
Bucknell responded with its best drive of the first half. A 59-yard completion from Rucker to receiver Sam Milligan of Swarthmore, Pa., who finished with five catches for 109 yards, set up a 29-yard field goal from Matt Schearer to get the Bison on the board.
Lehigh answered emphatically in the second quarter. Yoder finished another sustained drive with a 1-yard plunge into the end zone, pushing the lead to 17-3.
Bucknell’s offense, which had struggled to find consistency, finally put together a touchdown drive just before halftime. Rucker engineered a 13-play, 85-yard march, capping it himself with a 5-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to 17-10 at the intermission.
Any momentum the Bison carried into the locker room was completely erased by a devastating third quarter from Lehigh. The Mountain Hawks scored 21 unanswered points to put the game out of reach.
The blitz started immediately. On the opening drive of the second half, Green broke free for a 23-yard touchdown run. On Lehigh’s next possession, Johnson found Green on a 6-yard touchdown pass. Then, just before the quarter ended, Johnson connected with Mason Humphrey on a 17-yard scoring strike, stretching the lead to an insurmountable 38-10.
Bucknell quarterback Ralph Rucker IV of Lucas, Texas, put up strong numbers in a losing effort, completing 23 of 34 passes for 291 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for 35 yards and another score. He led two fourth-quarter touchdown drives, finding Nate Anderson on a 10-yard pass and TJ Cadden on a 3-yard pass to make the score more respectable at 38-24.
Lehigh sealed the victory with a final drive that consumed over five minutes of clock, culminating in a 23-yard field goal from Garrido with 1:42 remaining to provide the final margin of 41-24.
The result was a stark contrast to the pregame projections. Interstat’s game simulator had predicted a narrow 28-26 victory for Bucknell, though its ELO rating system gave Lehigh a 71.5% chance to win. The combined score of 65 points sailed over the betting over/under line of 54.5.
Lehigh looks to continue its perfect start next Saturday when it hosts Penn. Bucknell will aim to get back on track at home against Saint Francis (Pa.).
