PRINCETON, N.J. (Interstat) — Adam Criter scored three rushing touchdowns, including the game-winner with just over a minute to play, to cap a wild fourth-quarter comeback as San Diego stunned Princeton 42-35 on Saturday at Princeton Stadium.

The Toreros, who entered the game as two-touchdown underdogs, scored 21 unanswered points in the final quarter to erase a 35-21 deficit and hand the Tigers a season-opening loss. San Diego evened its record at 2-2.

The game was a tale of explosive quarters. Princeton dominated the first, racing out to a 21-0 lead behind touchdown runs from Asher Weiner, Dareion Murphy and a 55-yard scamper from Ethan Clark. San Diego answered with 21 points of its own in the second quarter, with quarterback Tyler Voss connecting with Josh Heverly and Christopher Hall for scores to knot the game at 21-21.

Princeton regained control before halftime. Kai Colon hit Clark for a 25-yard touchdown pass, and Murphy added an 18-yard scoring run to give the Tigers a 35-21 advantage at the break.

After a scoreless third quarter, the Toreros mounted their comeback. Criter, who finished with 105 rushing yards and 68 receiving yards, plunged in from 4 yards out to cut the deficit to 35-28. On Princeton’s ensuing possession, Colon fumbled and San Diego’s Jaden Williams recovered, setting up a 24-yard touchdown run by Criter to tie the game.

San Diego’s defense forced a punt, and the Toreros embarked on a methodical, game-winning drive. Criter carried the load, capping it with an 8-yard touchdown run with 1:04 remaining to give San Diego its first lead of the day. Princeton’s final drive ended with an incomplete pass as time expired.

Voss was efficient for San Diego, completing 25 of 34 passes for 237 yards and three touchdowns. Hall had seven catches for 90 yards and a score.

Princeton’s offense was led by a trio of quarterbacks. Colon passed for 196 yards and a touchdown, while Blaine Hipa added 87 yards through the air. Clark was a dual threat, rushing for 72 yards and a touchdown while catching three passes for 34 yards and another score.

San Diego next hosts Saint Thomas (Minn.) on Sept. 27. Princeton looks for its first win when it travels to Lafayette on the same day.
