Northwestern State at Prairie View

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas (Interstat) — In a game defined by explosive runs and a dramatic fourth-quarter lead change, the Prairie View A&M Panthers secured a 27-24 victory over the Northwestern State Demons on Saturday night at a rain-soaked Panther Stadium.

The win, sealed by a powerful Lamagea McDowell touchdown run with just over five minutes remaining, improved the Panthers to 2-2 on the season, while the Demons fell to 1-3.

The game unfolded as a stark contrast to pregame projections. Interstat’s game simulator had predicted a 42-27 Prairie View win, with an ELO system giving the Panthers a 90 percent probability of victory. However, Northwestern State, despite being a 9.5-point underdog, controlled large portions of the contest before ultimately falling short. The combined score of 51 points also defied oddsmakers, going over the set over/under line of 46.5.

Northwestern State quarterback Abram Johnston was the engine for the Demons’ offense, accounting for two touchdowns. He opened the scoring with a 21-yard touchdown pass to Camryn Davis late in the first quarter, capping a methodical opening drive. Johnston later broke free for a 29-yard touchdown run in the third quarter that gave the Demons a 17-15 lead at the time.

Prairie View’s answer came swiftly and spectacularly. On the first play from scrimmage following the Demons’ opening score, Panthers quarterback Tevin Carter, a 6-foot-3, 230-pound junior from Memphis, Tennessee, faked a handoff and sprinted 56 yards untouched to the end zone. The extra point was missed, leaving the score at 7-6.

The second quarter belonged to the Panthers’ ground game and their kicker. Aiden Webb of Dallas connected on a 28-yard field goal to tie the game at 10-10. After Northwestern State’s Grayson Lytton hit a 39-yard field goal to reclaim the lead, Prairie View embarked on a punishing drive just before halftime. It was McDowell, the 6-foot-2, 230-pound running back from Gastonia, North Carolina, who powered in from a yard out. A successful two-point conversion gave the Panthers an 18-13 advantage heading into the break.

The third quarter saw the two teams trade scores. Webb hit his second field goal, this time from 20 yards, but it was preceded by Johnston’s long touchdown run. The quarter ended with Prairie View holding a narrow 20-17 lead.

The decisive moment came in the fourth quarter. Following a critical interception by Prairie View linebacker Travor Randle of Greenwood, Mississippi, the Panthers’ offense took over. They leaned heavily on their dynamic running back duo. Chase Bingmon from Terrell, Texas, gashed the Demons’ defense all night, finishing with 180 rushing yards on 18 carries. But it was McDowell who delivered the final blow, carrying the ball six times on the go-ahead drive, including the final 5-yard touchdown plunge that put Prairie View up 27-17 with 5:20 left on the clock.

Northwestern State refused to go quietly. Johnston engineered a quick response, finding Ben Buisson for a 44-yard touchdown pass to bring the Demons within three points with just over four minutes remaining. However, the Panthers’ offense, behind the relentless running of Bingmon and McDowell, effectively drained the remaining clock. Carter took three kneel-downs to secure the win after his backs picked up three crucial first downs to deny Northwestern State a final possession.

Defensively, Caesar Magee III of Northwestern State had an interception for the Demons, while Randle’s fourth-quarter pick for Prairie View proved to be a monumental turnover.

The Panthers will look to build on this momentum next Saturday when they host rival Grambling. Northwestern State returns home to face Texas A&M-Commerce on Oct. 4.
