Sam Houston at Texas
AUSTIN, Texas (Interstat) — In a performance that was as dominant as it was expected, the Texas Longhorns methodically dismantled the Sam Houston Bearkats 55-0 on Saturday night before a crowd of 103,003 at a raucous Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.
Quarterback Arch Manning, the heralded redshirt sophomore from New Orleans, was nearly flawless, completing 18 of 21 passes for 309 yards and three touchdowns, adding another two scores on the ground in a display of surgical efficiency that saw the Longhorns build a 31-0 halftime lead and never look back.
The victory improved Texas to 3-1 on the season, while Sam Houston, an FBS independent, remained winless at 0-4.
From the opening kickoff, the mismatch in talent and execution was evident. The Longhorns’ defense set an immediate, suffocating tone. On Sam Houston’s first offensive play, defensive end Colin Simmons sacked Bearkats quarterback Hunter Watson for a two-yard loss, foreshadowing a long night for the visitors from Huntsville.
Texas’s offense, after a slow initial series, found its rhythm on its second possession. Manning engineered a 10-play, 76-yard drive that showcased the Longhorns’ balanced attack. A 16-yard completion to receiver DeAndre Moore Jr. and a 16-yard screen pass to running back Christian Clark moved the chains before running back Jerrick Gibson capped the drive with a 13-yard touchdown run.
The Longhorns’ defense forced another quick punt, and Manning went back to work. He methodically moved Texas down the field again, connecting with Moore and Parker Livingstone before finishing the 60-yard drive himself with a five-yard touchdown scramble to extend the lead to 14-0 before the first quarter had concluded.
The second quarter was more of the same. After another Sam Houston three-and-out, Manning needed just three plays to find the end zone. A 32-yard scamper by receiver Ryan Wingo on an end-around was followed by a perfectly thrown 32-yard touchdown strike to tight end Jordan Washington, pushing the lead to 21-0.
The Texas defense continued to overwhelm the Bearkats, whose offensive struggles were compounded by penalties and negative plays. Watson, a Celina, Texas, native, was under constant duress, finishing 13 of 25 for just 86 yards. He was sacked four times, with Trey Moore, Lance Jackson, Smith Orogbo and Brad Spence each recording one for a Longhorns defense that tallied nine tackles for loss.
Later in the second quarter, Manning led another long drive that stalled inside the 10-yard line, resulting in a 29-yard field goal from kicker Mason Shipley. Manning then put an exclamation point on his first-half performance just before the break. After a 39-yard deep ball to Ryan Niblett placed the ball at the two-yard line, Manning called his own number again, plunging in from two yards out for his second rushing touchdown and a 31-0 advantage.
Sam Houston’s best chance to score came on the ensuing drive as Watson drove the Bearkats to the Texas 42-yard line. But with eight seconds left, his pass into the end zone was intercepted by defensive back Jelani McDonald of Waco, sealing the first-half shutout.
Any thought of a Bearkats rally was extinguished immediately after halftime. On the first play of the third quarter, Manning dropped back and launched a 53-yard bomb to a streaking Wingo for a touchdown, making it 38-0 and effectively ending any competitive aspect of the contest.
Manning’s night was done after the next series, which he concluded with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Wingo, who finished with four catches for 93 yards and two scores.
From there, the Longhorns turned to their depth. Backup quarterback Matthew Caldwell of Auburn, Alabama, entered the game and immediately made an impact, ripping off a 50-yard run to set up a 38-yard Shipley field goal. Caldwell later led a scoring drive in the fourth quarter, finding Aaron Butler for a 17-yard gain to set up a five-yard touchdown run by Clark, who finished with 62 yards on 13 carries.
The Longhorns’ defense preserved the shutout with a final stand in the closing minutes, sacking Watson on the game’s last play to emphatically finish the 55-0 victory.
The win sets up a pivotal stretch for Texas, which begins Southeastern Conference play next week with a road trip to face the Florida Gators. For Sam Houston, the search for its first win continues next Thursday on the road against New Mexico State.
