Arkansas at Memphis
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Interstat) — In a wild, back-and-forth affair that came down to the final play, the Memphis Tigers remained undefeated Saturday, edging the Arkansas Razorbacks 32-31 at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium.
The Tigers, now 4-0, needed a heroic 64-yard touchdown run from Sutton Smith with under five minutes to play and a crucial defensive stop in the final seconds to secure the one-point victory. The loss dropped Arkansas to 2-2 on the season.
The game was a tale of two halves, with Arkansas dominating the second quarter before Memphis mounted a methodical comeback.
The Razorbacks struck first and fast. On just their third play from scrimmage, quarterback Taylen Green connected with receiver Rohan Jones on a 62-yard touchdown pass, giving Arkansas a 7-0 lead less than 90 seconds into the game.
Memphis responded with a 15-play, 75-yard drive that stalled at the Arkansas 20-yard line, forcing the Tigers to settle for a 38-yard Gianni Spetic field goal. The Tigers then engineered another long drive late in the first quarter, capped by a 4-yard touchdown run from quarterback Brendon Lewis to take a 10-7 lead.
The second quarter belonged entirely to Arkansas. The Razorbacks exploded for 21 points, starting with a 16-yard touchdown run from Braylen Russell. Later in the quarter, Jones scored his second touchdown of the day on a 5-yard run, and Mike Washington Jr. plunged in from a yard out to give the visitors a commanding 28-10 advantage.
Just before halftime, Memphis showed its first sign of life. Lewis engineered a quick drive, culminating in a 38-yard touchdown strike to Cortez Braham Jr. with 31 seconds left, cutting the deficit to 28-17 at the intermission.
Memphis carried that momentum into the second half. After trading field goals, the Tigers put together a decisive 7-play, 75-yard drive. Lewis, who was a dual-threat force all game, finished it with a 10-yard touchdown run. The failed two-point conversion left Memphis trailing 31-26 late in the third quarter.
The fourth quarter became a defensive struggle until the game’s defining play. Facing a first down at their own 36-yard line with just over five minutes remaining, Smith took a handoff, found a seam and outraced the Arkansas defense for a stunning 64-yard touchdown. Another failed two-point conversion left the Tigers with a narrow 32-31 lead.
Arkansas had one final chance to win the game. Green methodically drove the Razorbacks from their own 25-yard line deep into Memphis territory, largely on the legs of Washington. With just over a minute to play, Washington appeared to be marching Arkansas into game-winning field goal range. But on a carry from the Memphis 9-yard line, he fumbled after a 2-yard gain, and Memphis safety Chris Bracy fell on the loose ball at the 7-yard line with 1:13 remaining.
The Tigers’ offense was able to run out the clock, with Arrington Maiden converting a critical first down on an 11-yard run to seal the victory.
Statistically, Green had a strong day for Arkansas, passing for 325 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for 53 yards. Washington led the ground attack with 70 yards and a touchdown. Jones was the big-play threat, catching two passes for 102 yards and a score while adding another touchdown on the ground.
For Memphis, Lewis was the engine of the offense, throwing for 199 yards and a touchdown and rushing for 103 yards and another score. Smith was the workhorse, amassing 147 rushing yards and the game-winning touchdown on 12 carries. Braham Jr. was Lewis’s top target, hauling in seven catches for 102 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, Arkansas’s Quincy Rhodes Jr. recorded two sacks, while Memphis’s Crews Law had one. Each team intercepted two passes.
The Tigers will look to continue their perfect season next Saturday when they travel to face Florida Atlantic. Arkansas returns home to Fayetteville to host Notre Dame.
