OMAHA, Neb. (Interstat) — Walker McDuffie threw 3.2 scoreless innings of relief and Gavin Gallaher drove in two runs as North Carolina defeated West Virginia 5-2 in a playoff game Sunday at Charles Schwab Field. The Tar Heels improved to 52-12-1, while the Mountaineers fell to 46-16.

North Carolina tied the game 2-2 in the first inning and took the lead with a three-run seventh. Gallaher tripled in two unearned runs and scored on Owen Hull’s single. West Virginia starter Maxx Yehl worked seven innings, striking out seven without allowing a hit but gave up two earned runs. McDuffie allowed three hits and fanned four. Ryan Lynch pitched 4.2 innings for the win, and Caden Glauber recorded the final two outs. Armani Guzman had two hits and an RBI for West Virginia.
