Oregon at Texas

AUSTIN, Texas (Interstat) — Two of the nation’s top teams meet Saturday when Oregon visits Texas in a pivotal nonconference showdown at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

The Ducks (43-16) enter on a three-game winning streak after a 4-1 victory at Oregon State on Sunday. Left-hander Miles Gosztola (6.0 IP, 0 H, 1 ER, 8 K) earned the win in that outing, continuing a dominant stretch. Over his last four starts, Gosztola has allowed just two earned runs across 21.2 innings while striking out 24. His only losses came at UCLA, where he was touched for two earned runs in five innings but received little run support.

Oregon’s offense has been inconsistent of late. The Ducks managed only two runs in an 11-inning loss at UCLA on May 24, but bounced back with 14 runs against Yale on May 29 and seven in a shutout of Nebraska on May 23. The pitching staff, anchored by Gosztola and relievers Tanner Bradley and Luke Morgan — who combined for three scoreless innings against Oregon State — has held opponents to two or fewer runs in four of the last five games.

Texas (43-13) has won four of its last five, including a 6-4 victory at UC Santa Barbara on Sunday. Right-hander Ruger Riojas (5.0 IP, 0 H, 1 ER, 6 K) earned the win, improving his season totals. Riojas has been effective out of the bullpen as well, throwing a scoreless third of an inning against Missouri on May 16. In his last start at Tennessee on May 10, he allowed four earned runs in four innings but the Longhorns rallied for a 13-6 win.

The Longhorns’ offense has been potent, scoring at least six runs in eight of their last nine games. Designated hitter Ethan Mendoza went 2-for-4 with two RBIs in Sunday’s win. Texas features a deep lineup that produced 19 runs against Holy Cross on May 29 and 16 at Tarleton State on May 30. The pitching staff, aside from an 8-1 loss to Arkansas on May 22, has been reliable.

According to Interstat’s ELO system, Texas holds a 62.40 percent probability of winning. The Longhorns are installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5.

First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. CDT.
