Southern California at Texas A&M
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (Interstat) — Augie Lopez hit a three-run home run and drove in five runs to lead Southern California to a 7-1 victory over Texas A&M on Monday night at Olsen Field.
The Trojans improved to 47-16, while the Aggies dropped to 41-16. Southern California took the series opener after losing to Texas A&M in the teams’ previous meeting Sunday, when the Aggies won 14-3.
Lopez, the designated hitter, broke the game open in the seventh inning. With two runners on base, he pulled a pitch over the right-field wall to give USC a 5-1 lead. He later added a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning. Lopez also singled in a run in the fifth inning.
Grant Govel started for Southern California and allowed one run over four innings. He gave up three hits, walked two and struck out four. The only run came on a solo home run by Texas A&M catcher Bear Harrison in the bottom of the third, a line drive that cleared the left-field fence.
Chase Herrell relieved Govel and pitched three scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out two. Sax Matson and Adam Troy each worked an inning of relief, with Troy striking out one in a perfect ninth.
Southern California’s offense collected 12 hits. Adrian Lopez, the first baseman, had two hits and drove in a run. Designated hitter Augie Lopez went 2-for-4 with the home run, a single and the sacrifice fly. The Trojans also received hits from Covarrubias, Takeuchi, Cadena, Basseer, Lamb, Carpentier, Urbon and Riske.
Texas A&M starter Clayton Freshcorn took the loss. He pitched 6 ⅓ innings, allowing five runs on nine hits, walking two and striking out five. Freshcorn was relieved by Sdao, then Gavin Lyons and Cooper Powell. Lyons gave up two runs in the eighth.
The Aggies managed only six hits, led by Harrison’s home run. Wilson and Royo each singled, and Hacopian singled and walked. Texas A&M left seven runners on base and struck out nine times.
Southern California scored first in the fifth inning. Covarrubias singled home Carpentier, and Augie Lopez followed with an RBI single. The Trojans added three more in the seventh on Lopez’s homer, then two in the eighth on a fielder’s choice by Adrian Lopez and the sacrifice fly.
Texas A&M’s best scoring chance came in the fourth when they loaded the bases, but Wilson’s single to second base resulted in Hacopian being thrown out at home to end the inning.
The Trojans have now won four of their last five games. Texas A&M saw its two-game winning streak snapped.
