Troy at Florida
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (Interstat) — The Troy Trojans used a pair of big innings to roll past the Florida Gators 10-2 on Monday night, earning a split of the two-game series after dropping the opener a day earlier.
Troy (36-30) struck first in the top of the first inning. Clayton Piasecki drew a leadoff walk, and Blake Pyne followed with a single to left. After a groundout moved both runners into scoring position, Mason Janicki ripped a double down the right‑field line, scoring Piasecki and Pyne for a 2-0 lead. Troy starting pitcher Hayden Smith kept the Gators off the board through four innings, scattering two hits while striking out four.
The game remained 2-0 until the bottom of the fifth, when Florida (41-21) scratched across its first run. Cade Kurland led off with a double down the left‑field line. After a lineout, K. Jones singled to center and was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double, but Kurland scored on the play to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Troy answered immediately with a five‑run outburst in the top of the sixth. With one out, three consecutive walks loaded the bases. Russell Sandefer, who had just entered for Florida, was replaced by Ernesto LugoCanchola. Eli Nelson greeted the new pitcher with a single to left, driving in two runs and advancing to second on a throwing error by the left fielder. Matthew Darnell followed with a bunt single down the first‑base line to score another run, and Brennan Boroff doubled down the left‑field line to plate two more, making it 7-1.
Noah Thigpen took over on the mound for Troy in the bottom of the sixth and retired the Gators in order. Florida got one back in the seventh when Landon Stripling singled, Kurland singled, and K. Jones singled through the right side to drive in Stripling, trimming the lead to 7-2. Thigpen stranded runners at first and second by getting Lawson to pop up.
Troy put the game away in the top of the eighth. Kole Meier walked and stole second, and Darnell walked. Boroff then launched a three‑run home run to left field, his second extra‑base hit of the night, extending the lead to 10-2. Thigpen finished off the final two innings, allowing just one more hit while striking out four in four innings of relief to earn the win.
For Florida, K. Jones drove in two runs and had two hits. Kurland had two hits, including a double, and scored twice. The Gators’ pitching staff issued eight walks and hit two batters, and they could not overcome Troy’s timely hitting with runners in scoring position.
Troy’s offense collected nine hits, led by Boroff’s double and home run, which produced five RBIs. Janicki had two hits and two RBIs, and Nelson added two RBIs on a single. The Trojans also stole three bases.
The game was played in 87‑degree heat with a wind blowing out to right field at 8 mph. Florida’s loss snapped a three‑game winning streak, while Troy improved to 4‑1 in its last five games.
