Georgia Tech at Oklahoma

NORMAN, Okla. (Interstat) — Dayton Tockey’s walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th inning lifted Oklahoma to an 8-7 victory over Georgia Tech on Monday afternoon in a game that stretched into the evening.

Tockey’s solo shot to deep center field capped a wild back-and-forth contest that saw the Sooners erase a four-run deficit and force extra innings. The junior first baseman finished 2 for 4 with two runs scored and two RBIs, including the game-winner.

Georgia Tech took a 7-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning, only to watch Oklahoma chip away. The Sooners scored two runs in the seventh on an RBI fielder’s choice by Camden Johnson and a run-scoring double by Jaxon Willits, then added an unearned run in the eighth on a fielding error by Yellow Jackets pitcher Mason Patel.

Oklahoma tied the game in the bottom of the ninth. With one out, Johnson walked, advanced to second on a groundout and scored on a single to right by Willits, who went 3 for 5 with two RBIs. The Sooners then loaded the bases but left them stranded, sending the game to extra innings.

In the 10th, Georgia Tech went down in order against Oklahoma reliever Jackson Cleveland, who had entered in the seventh and pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings, striking out four without allowing a hit. Cleveland’s performance was a sharp turnaround from the previous day, when he gave up five earned runs in three innings against the same Yellow Jackets.

Tockey then stepped to the plate against Georgia Tech reliever Tate McKee and launched the walk-off homer.

The game began with Oklahoma jumping ahead early. In the bottom of the first inning, Deiten Lachance hit a two-run homer to left field, and Dasan Harris added an RBI single, giving the Sooners a 3-0 lead. Harris finished 3 for 5 with an RBI.

Georgia Tech answered in the top of the third. Carson Kerce walked and scored on a two-run homer by Drew Burress, who went 1 for 5 with two RBIs. The Yellow Jackets tied the game in the top of the fifth on back-to-back solo homers by Parker Brosius and Caleb Daniel.

Georgia Tech took control in the top of the sixth, scoring three unearned runs with two outs. A throwing error by Tockey extended the inning, and Daniel singled in a run, followed by an RBI single from Kerce. Brosius had earlier driven in a run on a groundout.

The Yellow Jackets had 12 hits, including two each from Kerce, Daniel and Jarren Advincula. Oklahoma collected 13 hits, with Harris and Willits each recording three.

Mason Patel started for Georgia Tech and went 6 1/3 innings, allowing two earned runs and five total runs while striking out six. He was charged with a no-decision after leaving with a 7-5 lead. Dylan Loy and McKee followed in relief.

Lachance finished 1 for 5 with two RBIs for Oklahoma. Brosius went 1 for 2 with a homer and two RBIs for Georgia Tech, while Daniel was 2 for 4 with a homer and two RBIs.

The win improved Oklahoma’s record to 36-22, while Georgia Tech fell to 48-11. According to betting lines, Oklahoma was a 2.5-run underdog entering the game but covered the spread with the walk-off victory. The teams conclude their series Tuesday.
