TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Interstat) — Northern Illinois (36-17) visits Florida State (39-18) on Sunday in a nonconference matchup at Dick Howser Stadium. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.

The Huskies enter on a five-game winning streak after a 12-10 victory at Coastal Carolina on Friday. Shortstop Nolan Sandee went 2 for 2 with four RBIs in that game, his second multi-hit performance in his past three starts. Sandee, a junior, has been streaky at the plate: he was hitless in three of his previous four games before Friday, including an 0-for-5 outing May 23 at Toledo. Over his last 10 games, Sandee is batting .261 (6 for 23) with six RBIs. He leads the Huskies in runs batted in and is a key cog in the middle of the lineup.

Florida State (39-18) won its most recent game 2-1 over Coastal Carolina on Saturday, behind a dominant start from right-hander Trey Beard. The junior tossed four scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out nine. Beard, who has a 2.84 ERA in 50⅔ innings this season, also threw six innings of one-run ball against Miami (Fla.) on May 15, striking out eight. In his last start May 9 at Clemson, he allowed three earned runs in 5⅓ innings with four strikeouts in a 4-3 loss. Beard is expected to start Sunday, giving Florida State a reliable arm on the mound.

Both teams have shown resilience in close games. The Seminoles are 7-3 in their last 10, with three losses by a combined four runs. The Huskies, meanwhile, have won nine of their last 11, with two of those victories coming in extra innings — including a 6-5, 15-inning win at Miami (Ohio) on May 21.

Northern Illinois’s pitching staff has been solid in recent outings. Relievers Cooper Cohn and Max Vaisvila combined for 5⅓ scoreless innings against Coastal Carolina, striking out six. The Huskies will need similar efficiency against a Florida State lineup that features third baseman Cal Fisher, who homered Saturday and is hitting .302 with 12 home runs.

Sunday’s game is the first of a two-game series. The teams will meet again Monday before Northern Illinois heads to face Saint John’s on the road.
