Mississippi vs. Arizona State

Lincoln, Neb. (Interstat) — Mississippi (38-21) faces Arizona State (38-20) on Sunday in the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship at Haymarket Park, with a trip to the next round on the line.

The Rebels and Sun Devils meet for the second time in three days after Mississippi edged Arizona State 7-6 in 14 innings on Friday. The winner of Sunday’s game advances, while the loser is eliminated.

Mississippi will send right-hander Taylor Rabe to the mound. The sophomore is coming off a dominant performance in a 6-3 win over Nebraska on Saturday, throwing six shutout innings with nine strikeouts and allowing only one unearned run. Rabe also tossed six scoreless innings against Alabama on May 15, striking out 13, and has 36 strikeouts over his last three starts.

Arizona State counters with a potent lineup led by outfielder Dominic Smaldino. The junior went 2-for-4 Friday against Mississippi with a double and two RBIs. Smaldino has power: he homered twice and drove in six runs in an 11-8 win over Oklahoma State on May 10, and added a solo homer in a 10-2 victory over Cincinnati on May 21. However, he was held hitless in two of his last three games entering Saturday.

The Sun Devils (38-20) rebounded from Friday’s loss by trouncing South Dakota State 17-0 on Saturday. Right-hander Kole Klecker threw eight scoreless innings, striking out 13, and Austen Roellig drove in five runs. Arizona State’s offense scored 27 runs over its past two games.

Mississippi (38-21) won its tournament opener Saturday behind Rabe and shortstop Owen Paino, who drove in three runs. The Rebels have won three of their last four overall, including two of three against Texas A&M to close the regular season.

This is the second meeting of the year between the two programs. Arizona State took a 6-3 lead into the ninth inning Friday before Mississippi rallied to force extras and win.

First pitch is set for 6 p.m. CDT.
