West Virginia at Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Interstat) — West Virginia looks to even the series Sunday against Kentucky at Kentucky Proud Park, one day after the Wildcats rallied for an 11-9 victory.

The Mountaineers (40-15) hold the better overall record, while Kentucky (33-21) has won three of its last four. West Virginia entered the weekend on a six-game win streak before Saturday’s loss.

Saturday’s game featured a back-and-forth affair. Kentucky second baseman Ethan Hindle drove in three runs on a 2-for-5 day, and designated hitter Luke Lawrence added two RBIs. Pitcher Jack Bennett worked four innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits while striking out three. For West Virginia, catcher Gavin Kelly homered twice and drove in three runs, and third baseman Tyrus Hall had two RBIs.

Sunday’s game will spotlight two players who have been pivotal for their clubs.

West Virginia’s Dawson Montesa has been used primarily out of the bullpen. In his last outing — a 10-5 win over Wake Forest on May 31 — he threw 7⅓ innings, allowing four earned runs on four hits with seven strikeouts. That strong performance followed a rough appearance May 23 at Kansas (⅓ inning, two earned runs) and a scoreless 1⅔ innings May 22 vs. Arizona State. Montesa has struck out 15 over his last 13⅓ innings across five appearances but has been inconsistent, with three outings of at least one earned run.

Kentucky’s Ethan Hindle has been productive at the plate. Over his last eight games, he has hits in six, including a 3-for-4 performance with a home run and two RBIs in a 4-3 win over Arkansas on May 14. Hindle went 2 for 5 with three RBIs in Saturday’s win over West Virginia and is batting .300 in his last seven contests.

West Virginia has been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of +1.5, reflecting its strong season resume. The Mountaineers have won five of their last six series, while Kentucky has split its last two.

Pitching matchups for Sunday were not announced as of Saturday night. West Virginia’s overall pitching staff owns a 3.98 ERA, while Kentucky’s hitters are averaging nearly seven runs per game over their last 10.

The game is the second of a two-game set between the in-state rivals. West Virginia returns home Monday to host Wake Forest.
