Florida at Troy
TROY, Ala. (Interstat) — The Florida Gators, riding a wave of offensive momentum, visit Trojan Field on Sunday to face Troy in a nonconference baseball clash.
Florida (41-19) enters the game after a 22-10 rout of Miami (Fla.) on Saturday. The Gators have won eight of their last 10, powered by an explosive lineup that has scored at least eight runs in six of those contests. Troy (33-30) looks to rebound after a 15-7 win over Rider on Saturday, but the Trojans have dropped four of their last six.
Players to watch
Florida catcher Karson Bowen has been the catalyst. In Saturday’s win over Miami, he went 3-for-5 with two home runs and five RBIs. Over his last 10 games, Bowen is hitting .333 with three homers and eight RBIs, though he has struck out in four of those contests. His 1-for-3 performance in a 7-8 loss at Georgia on May 23 remains an outlier in an otherwise torrid stretch.
Troy will counter with right-hander Zach Crotchfelt, who has been dominant out of the bullpen. Over his last four appearances spanning 12 innings, Crotchfelt has allowed one earned run with 15 strikeouts. On May 23 against Southern Mississippi, he threw five scoreless innings with eight strikeouts. He has not allowed a run in his last 9 2/3 innings.
Trends
Florida’s bats have been relentless. The Gators have scored in double digits in four of their last five games, including a 13-3 rout of Alabama on May 21. Shortstop Brendan Lawson and second baseman Cade Kurland each homered twice in Saturday’s win. The Gators’ pitching staff, however, has been inconsistent, allowing at least seven runs in three of their last four games.
Troy’s offense is capable but streaky. The Trojans managed just two runs in a loss to Miami on Friday before erupting for 15 against Rider. Third baseman Josh Pyne and catcher Jimmy Janicki each drove in three runs in Saturday’s victory. Troy has lost five of its last seven games against teams with winning records.
Game notes
Florida is installed as a pregame favorite by 4.5 runs. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. CDT. The game is the first of a two-game series; Miami (Fla.) visits Troy on Monday in Gainesville. Florida is seeking its 42nd win, while Troy aims to reach .500 for the first time since May 15.
