Liberty at Georgia

ATHENS, Ga. (Interstat) — Liberty Flames took an early lead Sunday but could not hold it as Georgia Bulldogs rallied for a 6-1 victory at Athens Olympic Indoor Hall. The Bulldogs improved to 49-12, while Liberty fell to 43-21.

Georgia’s offense broke through in the sixth inning and erupted in the eighth, erasing a 1-0 deficit and handing Liberty its second straight loss in the series.

Liberty struck first in the opening frame. Riley DeCandido doubled to right field and scored on J. Sorenson’s single up the middle. The Flames threatened again in the third and fourth innings with two-out hits, but Georgia starter Caden Aoki worked out of trouble. Aoki allowed one run on seven hits over six innings, striking out eight while walking none. He was relieved by Zach Brown, who pitched two scoreless innings, allowing only a single.

Liberty starter Cooper Harrington kept Georgia scoreless through five innings. He surrendered a leadoff single to Daniel Jackson in the fourth but stranded him. In the sixth, Harrington hit Henry Black with a pitch, and Tre Phelps followed by launching a two-run home run to left field, giving Georgia a 2-1 lead. Harrington exited after 6⅓ innings, charged with two runs on three hits and one hit batsman. He struck out five.

The Bulldogs put the game away in the eighth. Michael O’Shaughnessy led off with a solo home run to right field. Jackson doubled to center, and Rylan Lujo doubled to left, scoring Jackson and chasing reliever T. August. After a walk and a hit batsman loaded the bases, Aydan Decker-Petty entered for Liberty. Ryan Wynn greeted him with a two-run single to right field, scoring Lujo and Hudson. Wynn later stole second, and the Bulldogs added a walk and a fielder’s choice but left the bases loaded. Decker-Petty allowed two earned runs on one hit in his inning of work.

Georgia finished with seven hits. Phelps and O’Shaughnessy each homered. Jackson went 2 for 4 with a double and a single. Lujo doubled and drove in a run. Wynn had two RBIs. For Liberty, DeCandido collected three hits, including a double. Nick Barone doubled twice. Sorenson drove in the lone run.

The Flames managed only two hits after the first inning and struck out 13 times. Liberty’s last scoring threat ended in the top of the seventh when DeCandido singled with two outs, but Jaffe grounded out to shortstop.

The Bulldogs have won the first two games of the three-game series, following a 6-2 victory Saturday. The series concludes Sunday with Boston College replacing Liberty in the scheduled matchup.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a 7-6 Georgia victory. The ELO system gave Georgia a 73.60 percent probability of winning. Georgia was installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus 4½.
