Arizona State at Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. (Interstat) — Nebraska and Arizona State meet Sunday afternoon in a nonconference matchup at Haymarket Park, with both teams looking to bounce back from losses Saturday.

The Cornhuskers (43-16) enter the game as the projected winner, with Interstat’s game simulator forecasting a 7-6 victory. The Sun Devils (38-20) counter with a high-powered offense that scored 17 runs in their most recent win.

The forecast calls for partly cloudy skies and temperatures near 80 degrees at first pitch.

Arizona State’s offense is coming off a 17-0 shutout of South Dakota State on Saturday, a game in which third baseman/shortstop Austen Roellig went 2 for 4 with a home run and five RBIs, and second baseman Nu’u Contrades hit a home run and drove in four.

Right-hander Kole Klecker threw eight innings in that win, allowing three hits with no earned runs and 13 strikeouts. Over his past three starts — all victories — Klecker has a 0.84 ERA with 25 strikeouts in 17 innings. He is expected to start Sunday.

Nebraska counters with right-hander Ty Horn, who took the loss Saturday against Mississippi despite striking out nine over 5 2/3 innings. Horn allowed six hits and three earned runs. He has been effective in recent outings, including a seven-inning, eight-strikeout performance against Minnesota on May 15 and a six-inning, six-strikeout effort against Iowa on May 9. His season strikeout rate has been a key asset for a Nebraska staff that limits damage.

The Cornhuskers’ offense struggled Saturday, managing three runs on six hits against Mississippi. Pinch hitter Max Buettenback provided the only extra-base hit, a two-run homer. Nebraska won four of its previous five games before Saturday’s loss, including a 4-1 win over South Dakota State on Friday.

Arizona State has been streaky recently, losing three of four before Saturday’s blowout. The Sun Devils dropped a 14-inning, 7-6 decision at Mississippi on Friday, and lost two of three at Houston in mid-May. Their series win over Oklahoma State earlier this month included an 11-7 victory highlighted by Klecker’s five-inning, seven-strikeout outing.

Both teams are coming off series against common opponents Mississippi and South Dakota State, providing a recent comparative barometer. Nebraska took two of three from South Dakota State this weekend; Arizona State split its two games against the Jackrabbits.

Sunday’s game marks the final regular-season tuneup for both programs before postseason conference tournaments begin in June.
