Oklahoma State vs. South Carolina Upstate

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (Interstat) — Oklahoma State and South Carolina Upstate meet Sunday in an elimination game of the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship, with the Cowboys seeking revenge after a loss to the Spartans two days ago.

The 38-21 Cowboys, the visiting team, face the 34-29 Spartans at a neutral-site regional in Tuscaloosa. The winner advances in the double-elimination tournament.

South Carolina Upstate beat Oklahoma State 8-5 on Friday, setting up Sunday’s rematch. The Spartans then lost 7-5 to Alabama on Saturday, while Oklahoma State rallied for an 8-7, 11-inning victory over Alabama State on Saturday.

Right-handed pitcher Brennan Phillips is a key player for Oklahoma State. In Saturday’s win, Phillips threw 5⅔ innings, allowing no hits and two earned runs with seven strikeouts. His season has been uneven: he gave up six earned runs in five innings against Arizona State on May 10, but struck out five in 3⅔ innings against Arizona on May 14. He also recorded one strikeout in a third of an inning against Kansas on May 22.

For South Carolina Upstate, right-hander Brad Benton is a pitcher to watch. Benton threw three scoreless innings against Alabama on Saturday, allowing three hits and striking out one. On May 10, he pitched a perfect inning against Presbyterian with two strikeouts.

The Spartans’ offense has been productive in recent games. Their 8-5 win over Oklahoma State on Friday featured a balanced attack, and they scored eight runs against Longwood on May 24. The Cowboys’ lineup includes first baseman Colin Brueggemann, who homered and drove in four runs against Alabama State on Saturday.

Oklahoma State’s path to the regional included a series win over Arizona, a loss at Kansas, and a midweek win over Oral Roberts. South Carolina Upstate won series against Longwood and Northern Kentucky, and beat Clemson earlier in May.

The Interstat game simulator projects a 7-6 victory for South Carolina Upstate.

First pitch is scheduled for the afternoon at the Tuscaloosa regional site. The weather forecast calls for clear skies, with temperatures in the mid-80s.

Both teams are familiar with each other after Friday’s game, adding an extra layer of tension to Sunday’s matchup. The winner will face the loser of the Alabama-Alabama State game later in the day.
