Miami (FL) vs. Troy

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (Interstat) — The Miami Hurricanes and Troy Trojans will meet Sunday afternoon in an NCAA Division I Baseball Championship playoff game at Gainesville’s ballpark.

Miami (39-19) enters as the higher seed after a 10-22 loss to Florida on Saturday, while Troy (33-30) comes off a 15-7 win over Rider the same day. The teams played Friday, with Miami winning 10-5. The Hurricanes have won two of three meetings this season, including a series sweep of Troy in late May.

The Hurricanes rely on right-hander Sebastian Santos-Olson, who worked 2⅔ innings of scoreless relief against Florida on Saturday, allowing no hits and one earned run with three strikeouts. In four recent appearances, Santos-Olson has given up one earned run over 5⅔ innings, striking out five. He is expected to be a key bullpen arm Sunday.

For Troy, catcher Jimmy Janicki has been a consistent offensive threat. He went 2 for 6 with three RBIs in Saturday’s win over Rider and has driven in at least one run in five of his last seven games. Over his past 10 contests, Janicki is batting .333 with one home run and seven RBIs.

Interstat’s game simulator projects a 7-6 Miami victory.

The game is the first elimination contest of the regional, with the winner advancing to face the Gainesville host team.

Other Miami contributors include second baseman Jake Ogden, who homered and drove in two runs against Florida, and pitchers Packy Bradley-Cooney, who threw 1⅓ scoreless innings Saturday. Troy’s offense has been boosted by third baseman Josh Pyne and shortstop Aaron Piasecki, each with three RBIs against Rider.

Miami’s pitching staff has been inconsistent lately, allowing 22 runs to Florida after giving up nine to Georgia Tech on May 23. The Hurricanes have lost three of their last four. Troy has won four of its last five, including a series victory at Louisiana-Monroe and a split at Southern Mississippi.

First pitch is set for 3 p.m. EDT. The forecast calls for temperatures in the mid-80s with partly cloudy skies.
