Saint Mary`s vs. Cal Poly
LOS ANGELES (Interstat) — Cal Poly’s pitching held Saint Mary’s to one run and the Mustangs’ bats erupted for 13 hits in a 14-1 playoff victory Saturday night at Matador Field.
The Mustangs improved to 38-22, while the Gaels fell to 32-26. Cal Poly starter Carson Turnquist set the tone, allowing one earned run on five hits over six innings with seven strikeouts. Catcher Ryan Tayman went 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBI. Designated hitter Cam Hoiland added a homer and two RBI, and center fielder Casey Murray Jr. drove in three runs.
Saint Mary’s took an early lead in the second inning. Isaac Armstrong doubled and scored on a single by Jacob Johnson, but the Gaels managed only seven more hits after that. The game remained 1-1 until the bottom of the fourth, when Cal Poly sent 11 batters to the plate and scored six runs.
Tayman singled to start the rally, and Hoiland followed with a two-run homer to right-center. After a walk and a strikeout, Mason Spiridonoff singled, and Davide Vachini was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Alex Castellon singled in a run, and a groundout by Sebastian Garza made it 5-1. With Talin Gardini now on the mound for Saint Mary’s, a wild pitch scored Vachini, another wild pitch brought home Castellon, and the Mustangs led 7-1.
The Gaels never recovered. Cal Poly added five more runs in the sixth inning. Tayman singled home a run, and after a pitching change, Cooper Berger surrendered a sacrifice fly, a two-run double by Murray Jr. and an RBI single by Spiridonoff to push the lead to 12-1.
Turnquist, who earned the win, was the top star. He struck out seven and permitted only five hits in a dominant outing. His previous start was a win at UC Santa Barbara, where he tossed six scoreless innings with seven strikeouts.
Saint Mary’s relievers tried to halt the damage. Gardini threw 1 1/3 innings without allowing a hit, and Noah Waldeck pitched 1 1/3 hitless frames. But the Mustangs kept scoring, adding two more runs in the seventh on a bases-loaded walk and a hit batter.
Cal Poly’s bullpen then shut down the Gaels. Chris Downs, Josh Morano and Troy Cooper each worked a scoreless inning, with Cooper striking out one.
The Gaels scored their only run in the second inning. Armstrong doubled to the right-field wall and moved to third on a wild pitch. Johnson singled to right, driving in Armstrong, but he was thrown out trying to take second. After that, Saint Mary’s managed only seven hits, leaving six runners on base.
The Mustangs’ offensive explosion came in key moments. The fourth inning turned a tight game into a rout. Tayman’s single and Hoiland’s homer sparked the outburst, and the Mustangs capitalized on two Saint Mary’s errors and three wild pitches.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Cal Poly 7, Saint Mary’s 6, and its ELO system gave the Mustangs a 57.10 percent probability to win.
