Alabama at South Carolina Upstate

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Interstat) — Alabama visits South Carolina Upstate on Saturday, May 30, for a nonconference matchup at Cleveland S. Harley Park. The Crimson Tide (38-19) enter on a high after a 21-3 rout of Alabama State on Friday, while the Spartans (34-28) are coming off an 8-5 victory at Oklahoma State.

Alabama’s offense showed its explosive potential against Alabama State. Center fielder Bryce Fowler went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Right fielder Brady Neal added a homer and two RBIs, and first baseman Luke Vaughn went 2-for-2 with a homer and three RBIs. The Crimson Tide have been inconsistent at the plate in recent weeks, however. Fowler, a key bat to watch, has alternated strong performances with quiet games. He went 3-for-4 with an RBI in a 6-2 win over Mississippi on May 16 but also had 0-for-3 outings against Florida on May 21 and Mississippi on May 15.

Alabama has won five of its last seven games. The Crimson Tide dropped a 13-3 decision at Florida on May 21 but swept a three-game series at South Carolina on May 8-10. Their pitching staff will need to contain a Spartans lineup that has won six of its last nine.

South Carolina Upstate relies on a deep bullpen. Right-hander Max Bianchini has been a reliable arm out of the pen. He threw three scoreless innings against Oklahoma State on Friday, allowing no hits and striking out two. Bianchini has not allowed an earned run in four of his last five appearances, covering 10 1/3 innings. He threw three scoreless frames against Northern Kentucky on May 15 and two scoreless innings against Clemson on May 12.

The Spartans’ series win at Oklahoma State was a strong statement. Brent Stukes started the Friday game, allowing five earned runs in five innings but striking out six. Jacob Kirby closed with a scoreless inning and two strikeouts. South Carolina Upstate has been tested, splitting a doubleheader with Longwood on May 24 and beating Northern Kentucky in back-to-back one-run games on May 15-16.

Alabama’s offense has shown it can put up big numbers, but also can go cold. The Spartans’ pitching, anchored by Bianchini and a capable bullpen, will try to contain Fowler and Neal. The Crimson Tide’s recent road success — sweeping South Carolina — suggests they are comfortable away from home.

First pitch is set for 4 p.m. ET.
