North Carolina at East Carolina

GREENVILLE, N.C. (Interstat) — North Carolina and East Carolina meet Saturday at Clark-LeClair Stadium for a nonconference matchup featuring two of the nation’s hottest pitchers.

The Tar Heels (46-11-1) enter on a two-game winning streak after Friday’s 8-0 shutout of Virginia Commonwealth. Right-hander Ryan Lynch struck out five over seven innings of two-hit ball in that start, lowering his ERA over his last three outings to 1.93. The junior has allowed three earned runs across 14 innings in that span while fanning 14. For the season, Lynch has been a key piece in a Tar Heels rotation that has powered the team to the second-best record in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

East Carolina (37-22) counters with left-hander Ethan Norby, who has been nearly untouchable in recent weeks. The sophomore tossed 4 2/3 hitless innings Friday at Tennessee, allowing one unearned run while striking out eight in a 7-3, 14-inning win. In his last three starts, Norby has surrendered two earned runs over 12 2/3 innings with 20 strikeouts. He has not allowed a hit in his past 10 1/3 innings.

The series dates to February, when the teams split three games at East Carolina. The Pirates won 10-3 on Feb. 21, the Tar Heels answered with a 10-0 shutout Feb. 20, and the finale ended in a 3-3 tie Feb. 22. North Carolina leads the all-time series 58-39-1.

North Carolina’s offense has been prolific, averaging 10 runs over its last five wins. Third baseman Cooper Nicholson went 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs in Friday’s win, and first baseman Erik Paulsen drove in three runs. The Tar Heels have scored at least seven runs in 10 of their last 12 victories.

East Carolina’s bullpen has been a strength. Ryan Towers threw four hitless innings Friday, and Joseph Webb added 2 1/3 perfect frames. The Pirates have won four of their last five, with the lone loss coming May 23 at Texas-San Antonio.

First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. Weather is expected to be clear with temperatures in the mid-80s.
